Mary was also known as Mame or Mamie, according to the impressions of her granddaughter Mary (McDermott) Ryan. That fits pretty well because the caption to a photograph of Patrick and Julia Shannon and all their kids labels her as ``Mame McD.'' in the version of the caption handed down to Dennis Nicklaus.
Mary was ill for three years before her death.
