what is a ghost?

dictionary
according to webster's dictionary a ghost is "a disembodied soul; the soul of a dead person believed to be an inhabitant of the unseen world or to appear to the living in bodily likeness"

Joshua P. Warren
according to Joshua P. Warren in his book How To Hunt Ghosts he defines a ghost as "some paranormal aspect of the physical form and/or mental presence that appears to exist apart from the original physical form."

he also breaks down "ghostly activity" into five sections:

entities - "a ghost that appears to be conscious and often interactive."
imprints - "ghostly activity that appears nonconscious and redendant."
warps - "a location where the known laws of physics do not always apply and space and time may be distorted."
poltergeists - "noisy ghost that is dependent upon the presence of a specific individual or individuals."
naturals - "a rare phenomenon that appears ghostly, but in fact is created by some scientifically unknown property of the present nature."

Richard Southall
according to Richard Southall in his book How to be a Ghost Hunter he defines a ghost as "a recording of one or more persons or objects that had either a repetitious routine or a very intense emotional experience. this recording is not sentient, but rather simply something that plays over and over, gradually losing energy over time. these recordings can be recharged under certain circumstances, such as the appearance of certain individuals."

according to Southall he defines entities "to be angels or demons. they are completely spiritual or ethereal in nature and actually have never lived as human beings. this type of manifestation is fairly uncommon and in the vast majority of cases where entities are suspected, the real culprits turn out to be ghosts or spirits."

a ghost can not offically be defined. the differences in defintion are shown above. so the researching must go on.
