::hero gregor::

In this fantasy Gregor MacKay and I make our way to an enchanted picnic by the sea when Gregor is obligated into an act of heroism. We sail along in our bullet-hued convertible, oblivious to the world around us. The roaring blare of a fire engine breaks into our consciousness. "Zounds!" I say. A wild look crosses upon my alabaster features. "Do not be frightened, my love," Gregor coos softly. He pulls the car over to the side of the street. My hand searches briefly and then finds his. Our fingers entangle, but it is ephemeral. In the distance, rising flames begin to engulf an old building. I gasp. My arm flits up and I press the back of my hand daintily upon my forehead.

Gregor has already swiftly unbuckled his seatbelt. Deftly, with the speed and agility of pygmy marmoset, yet the solidness and confidence of a great Bengal tiger, he exits the vehicle. I have only to look into his eyes to ask the question. Where is he going? This man who owned my heart the day we met. Gregor's eyes, enflamed with courage and selflessness, need solely to glance at the building. I know. My eyes grow misty and he comforts me. My love rushes off to the deadly inferno. I cannot watch. I cannot listen. I can only sit blindly and weep.

But no. Gregor is brave and for my heart, I must emulate him. I must pour what is strong within me into him, so that he may return to me. Numb, I stumble to the building. I watch as he leaps in. The smoke stings and the fire crackles. Unmoving, I wait. Dead? No. He emerges. In his embrace is a tiny kitten. It lifts its green eyes to mine and utters the sweetest sound the have ever graced my ears. "For you." I take the precious creature into my arms. My shoulders shake. I am on his shoulder, sobbing. We walk behind the fire truck. "I will wrap you in the fire hose," I say. He stands and lets me coil the long tube tenderly around his body. "I am completely wrapped in the fire hose." "You are completely wrapped in the fire hose." "Meow." We laugh merrily.
