Shelter Girls: These pretty calico girls were in a cage together at a Humane Society shelter where I volunteer. I fell in love with Grace because of her eyes. I knew I wanted to adopt a cat, but I didn't know that Grace CAME WITH another calico cat. They seemed to be a set. In retrospect, I now know it would have been a disaster to bring Grace home without her BatGirl. The BatGirl might be Grace's daughter, as she was a very small cat when I first saw her in June 99. Or they may be sis-furs!
These cats came to live with us July 5th, 99... What a blessing they have been!!!! |

At the shelter, Grace seemed somewhat maniacal. I think that being in a small cage with several cats was psychologically hard on her. She was responsive to being taken out, and held...and those eyes! She was extremely affectionate to one of the other cats in the cage with her...it was the BatGirl (below). Grace was always licking and rubbing heads with her. I am pretty sure that the shelter workers were going to have to put them down soon, since they were so agitated much of them time. I just couldn't let it happen. They are calm now. They just needed space! |

Grace learned very quickly what a lap is for...at first it puzzled her when I would try to hold her on my lap. She is now a "lap-cat" extraordinaire! In fact, she doesn't want to be petted too much unless she is on my lap, and then she wants to stretch out and loll about, and sometimes capture my hand for some serious licking (okay, sometimes she bites softly, too). |

The shelter workers were already calling her "Bat Kitty" because of her mask (which is really similar to Catwoman, a character in Batman comics). And because of her batty behavior-she was a wild thing...dashing about the cage, hanging off the door and ceiling. I think this is what agitated Grace so much.
I overheard someone say something about their "stay" being short there, because of the wildness. Well isn't it ironic that BatGirl has turned out to be the most docile and calm of all my kitties? She loves head rubs. |

Here they are, engaging in their favourite past-time, EATING!
The girls become very serious when it is time to eat. Although they are fed twice a day, they always act like it is a little celebration.
I used to think that their eagerness would go away once they realized there was plenty, and always would be...but Nooo...Gracie is in danger of becoming a VERY fat cat. |
