The group has been travelling for quite some time, trying their best to avoid any large concentrations of Soviet troops. They had heard rumors about the northern coast of Poland being safe. Unfortunately they have yet to see anyone that they could consider friendly.
The lights seen the night before are still on in the early hours when the group awakens. There is a nippy cold in the air, as yet another day passes in the month of August. The group moves to a slight hill that overlooks the tattered and partially bombed out town below. Sure enough, there are some lights on. A few streetlights cast their feeble glow in the early morning light. A studied look through binoculars reveals that even a couple of stoplights still go about their mindless routine of changing from green to yellow to red and then back again. No vehicles can be seen moving through the town, though, and only an occasional glimpse of movement in the dawn shadows gives any indication of life.
The group leader decides to take a closer look and see what the story is on the lights. In order for those lights to be operating in this town, some generators have to be operating somewhere. And that means people are about. People that might know something important.
The party moves down the hill and into the outskirts of the town. Most of the outskirt buildings have been gutted by fire and are just empty husks. Only the chirp of morning birds can be heard as the group starts to enter the more concentrated area of town. Occasional clatter can be heard from inside the multi-story buildings, but their darkness does not appear inviting enough to investigate. Peering from around corners at a safe distance are cloaked figures that slink away when anyone notices them.
Still the silence prevails. The group moves along the streets where a few, stripped hulks of vehicles rust away. The streetlights wink out as the light steadily increases from the rising sun. Slowly the morning cold releases it's grip on the group and they are warmed by the rays of the sun. One member of the group mentions that in order for any lights to be working, either a generator or a power plant needs to be running. Anyone with a good Intelligence roll will remember that some of these cities in Poland were powered by nuclear power plants. Perhaps this is one such city. The main question is, though, why is there power for this town now? Wouldn't the nuclear plant have been shut down or destroyed during the war?
As the group pauses under a stoplight that is still going silently about it's mindless task, they notice a lone figure approaching from down the street. The figure moves confidently and directly towards them, showing no fear and yet no hostility.
