Strength Testing

Varsity Blues Fitness in 2002 will be measured using three tests:

3000m Run: A standard fitness test that can be done either indoors or outdoors, around a track or the pitch.  The time required by each player to complete the 3K run is recorded.

6-minute Run: Each player runs from the goal line to the near 22-meter line and back; then to the center line and back; then to the far 22-meter line and back; then to the far goal line and back.  Players attempt to complete this routine three times in a 6-minute period (or a seven minute period if you're a prop or lock).

Hint: Practice your pivoting before test day.

Max Bench Press: Rugby fitness is not just about speed and/or aerobic capacity.  This test is included with the running based tests to ensure that an accurate picture of rugby fitness is established.

Maximum Bench Press can be measured in one of two ways:

i> One repetition at maximum weight.

ii> Do the maximum number of repetitions with a comfortable weight:

( # reps )( weight ) / (k) = MAX BP. Where k = 7.03125.

Strength test guidelines:

Choose a weight that will likely exhaust your muscles after 15 reps.

Maximum allowable reps for the test will be 20 (so don't aim to bench 5 lbs a gazillion times).

If you are unable to complete 7 reps, the weight used for the single rep will constitute your max bench press (as the formulaic method will result in a lower score).

Remember to warm up before your test.
