on this 160 acres of Homestead Land on 30 Oct 1863. He was mentioned in an affadavit
signed on 2 Jul 1869 in Deep River Twp., Bay Co., Michigan.
(169) The affadavit states that Wm. A. Grovenburgh is the head of
a family of eight children (with no wife listed). He died in 1893 in Arenac
Co., Michigan.(171)

1880 Census - William Grovenburg, age 63 (abt 1817), living with Emeline Grovenburg,
age 50, and Charlie Grovenburg, age 17.
The marriage date and place is a calculated guess - from the documented
birth dates and birthplaces of their first two children, Alpheus and Lucy.

Application #555; filed 17 Aug 1863, by Wm. A. Grovenburgh of Kalamazoo County,
Michigan, for Homestead Land Patent on Sec 11, NW 1/4 section (160 acres), in
Deep River Twp, Bay County, Michigan. Affidavit states he arrived on the land
& made settlement on 30 Oct 1863. Land Patent granted on 2 Jul 1869, and
filed 15 Mar 1870. Affidavit by Charles Smith & John Spears (known of Wm.
A. Grovenburgh for 6 years), dated 2 Jul 1869, that Wm. A. Grovenburgh is the
head of a family of eight children (no wife listed). Also, he has cultivated
12 acres of land, built a house18'x20' (board floor & 6 rooms) with an addition
of 14 1/2' x 20', dug a well, built a barn 20'x30', and set out 25 fruit trees.
He was married to Catherine about 1844/45 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New
York.

Living next door is John Hawkins, age 27, a day laborer, with a female, Catherine
Hawkins, age 57, a male Edward Hawkins, age 26, also a day laborer, and another
male, Samuel Hawkins, age 23, a cooper, and a female, Anna D. Dolph, age 6, born
in Michigan.
Also nearby is the household of George B. Spencer, with Maria Spencer living
there.

Catherine was born about 1826 in New York. She died
about 1865 in Deep River Twp., Bay Co., Michigan. Catherine possibly died in
childbirth. William A. Grovenburg and Catherine had the following children:

no real estate, born in England, with parents who are foreign born.

birthdate is estimated from her age at the time of marriage to William A. Grovenburg.--
GENERAL NOTES;
1850 US Census - Maria is age 26, born Nova Scotia.
1860 US Census - Maria Spencer is found in the household of George B. Spencer.
She is 36 years old and born in Nova Scotia. He is a master shoemaker, with $500
in real estate, age 44 and also born in Nova Scotia. He was married to Emeline
before 1880.
