1969 The Kitchener-Waterloo
German School has 62 students.
All students are from German-speaking homes.
Prinzipal was Peter Wiese
1970 After Peter
Wiese emigrates to Germany and Herminio
Schmidt takes over.
Enrolment increases to 150 students. New teaching
methods are introduced to teach German as a second
language.
1970 A newly-formed
parent committee met for the first time
1971 The
name of the school is changed to “German Language
School Concordia”as Concordia Club as its sponsor.
The board of directors includes:
the Mayor of the City of Waterloo, two university
professors and the President of the Concordia Club.
1971
Principal Schmidt presents the “Concordia Method” to
200 teachers from German Language Schools all over
Ontario.
1972
The German students from the Transylvania Club join
the school. 250 students are enrolled, 47 % are from
non-German-speaking families.
1973
The Ontario Ministry of Education approves the
amalgamation of the German Language School
Concordia with the Waterloo County Board of
Education. 850 students are enrolled in German classes.
1974
80 % of all beginner students are from
non-German-speaking families. German School teachers
and high school teachers work on a county-wide German
curriculum.
1975
The first issue of the “Schulzeitung” is published.
Students develop a school crest.
1978
The Parent Association donates $ 1,000.00 for
badly-needed audio-visual equipment. They also finance
a folk-dance teacher and a music teacher. 850 students
recreate the pioneer life of the first settlers in the area for
a 90 minute TV-show.
1979
One hundred adult students are enrolled compared to 19
three years ago.
1980
The Tenth Anniversary of the German Language School
Concordia. 150 students participate in the
Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Parade which is
televised nationally for the first time.
1981
The Parent Association increases the total of the
travel scholarships to $ 6,200.00 compared to
$ 150.00 four years ago.
1982
300 teachers from across Canada, USA, and West
Germany visit the German School Concordia to study
its teaching approach.
1983
A West German travel agency advertises the
Concordia School in Kitchener as a special feature.
100 travelers arrive in Kitchener to visit the “largest
German Language School in North America”.
1984
37 senior students take part in a three-day educational
tour to Montreal, Quebec.
1985
The Waterloo County Board of Education reviews the
German Language School Concordia and finds
teachers to be doing an excellent job.
1986
Principal Dr. Herminio Schmidt
become the Vice-principal, the new principal is
Mr. Harold Martin
1986
The German Language School Concordia holds a
conference for teachers in Elora, Ontario.
1987
Mr. Harold Martin left the school and was succeeded
by Mr. Helmuth Glaessner
1987
The Hanover German Language School comes to visit
the Concordia School. Students take part in
several class sessions.
1988
Mrs. Doris Meidele becomes the new principal
1988
40 senior students take part in a three-day educational
tour to Sudbury, Ontario.
1989
Dr. Herminio Schmidt resigned after 21 years at
the German Language School
