Chamber of Commerce Service Project
We contacted the Chamber and offered plants to fill one of the containers in the downtown area. After talking to the director and informing her of our flower sale project, she suggested that we sell the flowers to the all the businesses and offer to plant them for free. We also offered to trim and fertilize them.
After it rained and rained and rained in June, we finally finished the last of the planters making a little over $300 for the fundraiser. The girls started the service project. They fertilized and trimmed the flowers during the summer. They even when the 120+ degree heat got to some of the plants replanted the pots. Everyone selected a week to care for the plants. You only had to check on them once during that week-Sunday was the best day. Then call the next person on the list.
When the scouts checked them, they looked for yellowing leaves, which indicates they need fertilizer. Red spider was found on them in August when we returned from our trip to Florida. You can spot them by holding a white paper under the leaf and shaking it. If tiny moving red specks appear on the paper, you have red spider. We also deed headed old flowers. The businesses were supposed to water them but we did loose some in the 120+ degree heat. We did replace them.
The girls earned, in addition to Girl Scout recognitions, a community service citation from the Chamber called the Do Gooder Award .
