History
These vehicles are renowned for longevity and toughness, the body panels and boxed chassis are thicker and more rigid, than on the models that follow it. This coupled with its galvanized body cappings have made it the vehicle of choice for many long after production ended.

Very reliable chains drive the engines camshafts, although the 6-cylinder engine is prone to problems in dusty conditions and the diesel engine has always been considered as "not very good". All of the models were available with the optional safari style double roof.

The rugged reputation on this vehicle goes hand-in-hand with the basic interior. The instrumentation and controls are van-like, the moulded plastic dashboard is crude and the seating is basic. The opening windows are sliding not winding types and the fresh-air ventilation is by means of simple flaps below the windscreen, all of which dates back to the early Landrovers.

The MOD ordered series III Lightweight models as well as the GS design. A special 1-ton version was also produced. The luxurious sister vehicle the Range Rover was introduced in 1970.
