Dr. Hafied Gany was born in Watan Soppeng, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on November 10, 1944. He started his professional career in the Water Resources Development and Management as a construction supervisor of water resources projects after completing his civil engineering undergraduate in Bandung in 1967. From 1968 to 1981, Dr. Gany had a series of experiences working in the water resources design, construction, Operation & Maintenance and maanagement of water resources infrastructures, as well as field research and experimental activities on the same disciplines and their related subjects.

In 1979, he obtained M.Sc. degree from the University of Southampton, U.K. He was assigned as the project manager of the Construction Guidance Service Center - CGSC - Project, at the same time as chief of the Research Station for Hydraulic Structures of the Ministry of Public Works in Bekasi, West Java Province from 1985 to 1989.

In 1982, he obtained a Ph.D. at the Columbia Pacific University, California - USA, majoring Irrigation Development. In 1993 he obtained an interdisciplinary Ph.D. majoring Engineering, Economics, Sociology, and Demography at the University of Manitoba, Canada, with commendation. Graduated with commendation from the Indonecian Supreme Civil Servant's College (SPATI-II), National Institute of Civil Administration (LAN) 1996-97.

Dr. Gany has published more than 100 professional papers, beside his experiences to attend international seminars, conferences and congresses in more than 20 countries over five continents.

(1) From 1995 to 1999, he had been assigned as the Director of Water Resources Management and Conservation, DGWRD, Ministry of Public Works, R.I.; (2) From 1999 to 2000, he had been assigned as Deputy Director General of Water Resources Development -- DGWRD; (3) From 2000 to 2001 assigned as Assistant Deputy of Water Resources Protection and Conservation, State Ministry of Public Works November; (4) From 2001 to 2002 as the Director of Research Institute for Water Resources, Ministry of Settlement and Regional Infrastructures (SRI); (5) From 2002 to 2003 as the Executive Secretary of the Directorate General of Research and Development, Ministry of SRI; (6) From 2003 till present as a Supreme HRD Instructor (Widyaiswara Utama) Ministry of Public Works, majoring Water Resources and Irrigation Development and Management; (7) From 1993 to 2000 as the Secretarry General of the Indonesian National Committee of International Commission of Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) and as Vice President of ICID for International Communication since 2000; (8) Board of Director of International Network on Participatory Irrigation Management (INPIM) - An Organization Based in Washington, DC - since 1996; at the same time as (9) the President of the Indonesian Chapter of INPIM (INPIM-INA) till present.

The Indonesian Committee Member for Professional Civil Engineers' Assessor since 1995; and also as the Indonesian Committe Member for assessor on Professional Hydraulic Engineers' (HATHI) since 2002.

He was awarded by the Minister of Public Works a 20 years honor for an outstanding services at the Ministry of Public Works in 1988.

Presidential Award for 30 years outstanding services to the Government of Indonesia, August 1996.

Presidential Award for an outstanding working achievement, December 1996.

Presidential Award for National Development Contribution, August 1999.
