This album, a homegrown salute to California country music guitar titan
Roy Nichols, is essentially a family affair that features contributions from the near and
dear to distant cousins. Not blood related family, of course, but rather a gathering of
extended, affectionate musical tribe-members. Assembled and overseen by Los Angeles hard
country belter Kathy Robertson, with inspiration and guidance provided by none other than
the great Bonnie Owens, award-winning veteran thrush who's worked many a season with Merle
Haggard & The Strangers (and Bonnie can also lay claim to the title of being the
only woman in history who has been married to two members of the Country Music Hall of
Fame, Haggard and Buck Owens). |
This set not only
features Robertson's authoritative vocals (honed over
the course of innumerable nights in Low Angeles and Bakersfield, where
she often worked with Red Simpson), it also showcases many of Bonnie's
previously unheard songs, her superlative vocals and contributions from
the likes of the Strangers Joe Manuel, former Desert Rose Band/Bellamy
Brothers guitarist Jeff Ross, esteemed guitarmen Albert Lee and Jerry
Donhue, Rosie Flores and many others, all united under a common banner:
reverence and respect for the legendary Roy Nichols. Nichols, after all, has set the
entire tone for California country music since his 1948 start at age 16, with the Maddox
Brothers & Rose; after a two year stint recording and touring with the great Lefty
Frizzell, he returned to the San Joaquin and by 1955 was a regular on Bakersfield's daily
Herb Henson TV show ( where he |

first met Bonnie Owens) until
joining pioneering California honky tonk genius Wynn Stewart's band (where he first met a
young Merle Haggard) until Haggard hired him in 1965 for a magnificent 21 year stint as
lead guitarist for the Strangers. Everyone involved in this project will tell you how
important Nichols was and is to West coast country, and the musical standard he set is
reflected in the heartfelt contributions of each. So, Roy, here's to you, with love.
