As the anime are from
Japan, so are the manga. The manga come from two
channels: the commercial publishers, and the amateur
circles (the manga they produced are called
doujinshi). Some of the manga are drawn for the young
female audience (shojo manga), some for young male
audience (shonen manga), some for more mature
audience, and some are of the yaoi or shonen-ai
genre, a genre that deals ONLY with male/male
relationship.
I haven't really seen
any gay comics/animation produced by the western
world myself, but a glimpse here and there gave me
the impression these gay comics/animation all feature
macho men graphically together, targeted at the gay
community. This is totally contrary to the yaoi
genre, the yaoi manga are drawn by women, and
targeted at the female readers. The characters are
mostly androgynous, young, and just plain beautiful,
while the story takes on any form, like a simple
romantic love story between 2 high school students, a
story about heavenly angels that only love other
angels of the same sex, rape, incest, SM, angst,
decadence, really anything you can name. Amazingly,
the volume of work in this area is uncountable, I
can't imagine how big the market is (I know it's a
big business, but don't really have any numbers).

Note:
The ratings are pretty much based on my personal
preference. A title may have 3 because the story is really
good, the art is great, a character is particulary
charming, or anything that strikes me as special.
