Law


IDEA-Individuals with Disabilities Education Act-the federal special education law, reauthorized every 7 years by Congress.
NJAC6A:14-New Jersey Administrative Code-state special education lawe-reauthorized by state legislature after IDEA is reauthorized.

Paperwork


IFSP-Individualized Family Service Plan-a plan drawn up for families of children enrolled in Early Intervention-age birth to 3.
IEP-Individual Education Plan-the education plan drawn up by the IEP team-of which the parent is a part of-for ages 3 to 21, if still enrolled in school. Sample IEP's, including annotated with references to special education law, can be found at Sample IEP
PRISE-Parental Rights In Special Education-a guide which gives a "snapshot" of a parents rights under IDEA and NJAC.
IHP-Individual Health Plan-a part of the IEP that deals specifically with health plan for a child who has complex medical issues

Services


PT-physical therapy-therapy that works on gross motor skills, such as walking, running, stair climbing, etc.
OT-occupational therapy-therapy that works on fine motor skills, such as writing, tying shoes, etc.
Speech-speech therapy-therapy that works on speech/language skills, such as speaking, turn taking in conversation, lisps, etc.
AT-assistive technology-any piece of equipment that will help the student to succeed in school, such as a pencil grip, computer, move and sit cushion, etc.
SLP-speech/language pathologist-a person who is trained as a speech therapist
FBA-Functional Behavioral Assessment-an assessment of a child's behaviors to determine if the behavior is a part of the disability or not
BIP-Behavioral Intervention Plan-a plan drawn up in response to a FBA to determine how to deal with a particular behavior

Classifications


EI-Early Intervention-age birth to 3
MD-Multiple Disabilities-a classification used when more than 2 other classifications are determined to be appropriate for a child.
OHI-Other Health Impaired-a classification used when a child has a medical condition that affects how they learn, such as ADHD
SLD-Specific Learning Disability-a classification used when a child has a specific area that needs to be addressed, such as reading or math.
CI-Communication Impaired-a classification used when a child has problems communicating.
OIOrthopedically Impaired-a classification used when a child has a orthopedic disability that affects their gross motor skills.
Autism-this is a fairly new classification-a pervasive developmental disability which impacts the verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction that adversely affects educational performance.

Placements


Inclusion-student included with typically developing peers while still provided with the appropriate supports and services
LRE-Least Restrictive Environment-placement in the school as close to home as possible, in the school where the child would have normally attended if the child did not have a disability. Resource Room-students pulled out of the regular classroom to receive more individualized instruction
Self Contained Class-a class where the only students are students who are classified as needing special education services
Out of District-a student is placed in a program that is not located within the local school district
Residential Placement-a student is placed at a facility where they live and attend school

Organizations


SPAN-Statewide Parent Advocacy Network-state PTI center SPAN is the only site in the country that has the PTI(education), Family Voices(health), and Parent to Parent (support) in one location.
PTI-Parent Training Information-federally mandated agency that is able to provide parents with assistance in advocating for their child
NJCIE-New Jersey Coalition on Inclusive Education-organization that advocates for inclusion of all children with special educaitonal needs.
PAC-Parent Advisory Council-parent groups that are mandated under IDEA for every school district
NAMI-National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Mercer Chapter-an organizaton that has classes for parents of children with challenging behaviors (autism, mental health, Tourette's, ADHD, etc), support groups, and NAMI Kids outings in the community
DDD-Division of Developmental Disabilities-state agency that can help families who have children with developmental disabilities. They offer respite, financial aid, behaviorists, special camp, assistive technology, etc.
CDD-New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities-Governor appointed council that advises the Division of Developmental Disabilities on family support issues.
