My General Educational Goals

My learning objective for the WebQuest is for my students to apply math (logic, reasoning, problem-solving, and algebraic) skills to their everyday lives, in this case the purchase of a vehicle – a basic life skill.

Description of My Students

My learners are 8th grade honors students at MS72 in South Jamaica. Many of these students are reluctant learners. However, they are very interested in things such as automobiles, music, and sports. The school draws its students from neighborhoods that are low income. Ethnically, the students are African American, Caribbean, Guyanese, Hispanic, and Asian Indian. Several of my students have been accepted in elite high schools such as York, Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Science, Philips Exeter, Andover, and other Prep schools.

Description of My Subject Matter

Using an area of potential interest (e.g. vehicles) to motivate my students to apply math (logic, reasoning, problem-solving, and algebraic) skills to their everyday lives, in this case the purchase of a vehicle – a valuable life skill.

My Learning Objectives

I would like my students to perform the following tasks:
    1. Explain their thought process – logically, step by step – using a variety of tools (written, graphic organizers, and mathematical). For example:
    2. Make and then explain their financial, mathematical calculations as part of the decision making process in buying and financing a car.

Prerequisites

This activity will reinforce the topics which we covered in class this year:

Summary of My Objective

At the end of the WebQuest, my students will be able to:
    1. Explain their thought process – logical, step by step – using a variety of tools (written, graphic organizers, and mathematical). What is their logical reasoning, thought process? What is reasonable and what is not? Is it ok to make emotional vs. rational (logical) decisions (choices)?

    2. Make and then explain their financial, mathematical calculations as part of the decision making process in buying and financing a car.

    3. The students will utilize topics which they learned this year for the 8th Grade NYS Math Test. Among these topics are:
