Blue Skies Costello, author's artistic rendering

Full Name: Me? *she shrugs and sticks out a newsprint-stained hand* Blue Skies Costello. *she narrows her eyes at you* Leadah of da Harlem Newsgoils. But you oughta know dat by now. *she leans back in her chair* An' if ya want da real one, it's Maria Rosella, but don't cawl me dat. *she squints at you, sizing you up* You kin cawl me Blue Skies, or Blue, or Skies. *she shrugs again* Hell, Costello works too, but dey cawl me bruddah dat too.
Age: *raises an eyebrow* Dat ain't none of yer business. *she's seventeen; eighteen in the fall*
Appearance: My name's Costello fer a reason. *she cracks a grin* An' if you gotta ask me dat, you must be blind. *she arches a black eyebrow* *Blue is of average build for her size, which is on the short side at 5'3". Pointing this fact out to her is bad for your health. She has fairly long thick black hair which she usually wears in a French braid; it is the only aspect of her appearance that she is truly fussy about* *Her clothing is unremarkable--worn pants, shirts, and sometimes a vest--save the silver pocketwatch she keeps on her person which once belonged to her father* *As for Blue's face, the most striking thing about it is her large blue eyes; she has a bit of a baby-face, with full cheeks and lips.*
Background: *a scowl flits past Blue's face, which then slides into a state devoid of any detectable emotion* *rather mechanically, she explains* My motha died when I was real little, so I nevah knew her. My brothers, Joel an' Charlie, and I lived with my fatha til I was around ten. They arrested my fatha. Money laundering. *she glances at you, arms crossed, then looks at the wall above your head* He's in prison now. Joel tried ta take care of Charlie an' me, but he was only sixteen. What did he know. *she casts her glance downwards, sighing* *she looks up again* So we ran outta money an' lost da 'partment, an' Charlie and I moved to da East Harlem Lodgin' house. Joel... I dunno, he worked and scrouged til he could rent a room in somewheas in East Harlem. That was back b'fore dere was a girls' house. But dere were some problems with too many girls livin' wit da boys... *she looks up at you* Among otha things... Ta make a long story short, a new house was founded wit me an' Flash in charge. *her face takes on a strange, uncomfortable expression; she does not mention that the original leader of the Harlem girls was murdered*
Relationships: *her face brightens* Aw, I go way back 'round heah. *she waves a hand nonchalantly* Course dere's Flash. She's my co-leadah, an' we go back fah years now. Ver, Imp, and Angel I've known from da beginnin' too. I watch out fer all my girls. *she says this rather off-handly, but in truth she fiercely cares about each member of her house; she just doesn't like to get very emotional about it* An' dere's Charlie, my bruddah ova' in day boys' house. Dey cawl him Chance 'round heah though. Loves ta gamble. *she grins* I've known Hustler, Tommy, Sham, and Shiner a long time too, though some of dem ain't with us anymore. And Sticks O'Leary. We been friends forevah! *she grins again* Oh, I know all da boys awright. 'Specially dat one dey cawl Knuckles. *she winks knowingly and lowers her voice* Dat's cause he's my boyfriend. *she laughs*
Other notes: *Having been raised primarily in the company of men, Blue Skies has a tendency to feel more comfortable in their prescence. She also has developed the tendency to keep her emotions under lock and key for the most part, in part from her upbringing, and in part from also doing some of her growing up under the roof of a newsboys' lodging house. Emotions are a sign of weakness, and she does not want to compromise herself as a leader. Despite this fact, she does care very deeply and does genuinely like all the girls in her house very, very much, though she might not ever say it directly. In her mind, actions speak louder than words.*
