History of Whitefalls

About 60 Turns after Crossing, the Council of Holders (as was) decided to found another expansion, along with the string of new Weyrs. It was to be an expeditional colony of sorts, a main Hold along with its own autonomous Weyr and Halls, which would stay in contact with the mainland and the Councils therein, but be very independent all the same. This separate HHW would monitor, from a safe distance, the grubs throughout the South.
The search for prospective research stations took more time than they would have liked, but after pouring over old maps of all sorts, they finally settled on the most obvious prospect: Ierne Island. They sent prospect teams of dragonriders looking for signs of forest life and a prospective weyr-site. Much to the search teams' surprise, most of the forest/jungle that dotted the Isle was safe somehow from Thread, either protected by Firelizards or safe by a remote, unknown spreading of the grubs, or by some freak erraticness of Thread itself and how it fell . . . They couldn't figure it out.

The most amazing thing discovered was the most probable site for the Weyr. It was a large 3/4ths crater that had obviously blown half its side in itsdeath throes. It had the prerequisite air pocket caves (most of which were naturally 'clean' enough that they could use only a little smoothing which dragons could provide themselves) and a fresh water supply that came from a large spring that fell out of the west side of the Weyr wall (about half-way up), creating a natural stream to a basin that collected into a lake and then poured into a double waterfall as it went over the ledge of the open east side. This place was perfect! They called it good and named it Whitefalls Weyr.

The only problem was that the mountains were very hard to scale and travel through. The ancients used as much power as they could to help carve the road that led outward from the Weyr at the center of the Isle out to the newly founded Ierne Hold at the central-eastern base of the mountains. They sent much of the remaining technology they could muster to the Hold itself for use in studying the spread of grubs. Then, many ofthe Weyrfolk and the Holders across the continent drew lots to see who would travel to this distant outpost and those people were transferred and life continued much as if would for hundreds of Turns to pass.

The start of the timeline for our pbem Whitefalls is 5 Turns after the beginning of the Sixth Pass. Ierne Island is still in decent contact with the Continent, although many of the Holders and Crafters tend to dislike the company or presence of 'Northies.' The Weyr is at near-full capacity, having had no lack of queens or large clutches in the past 10 Turns or so. The island deals greatly in fishing and forestry, and holds the main Dolphincrafthall. In the 3rd turn of the Pass, during an erratic Fall, the Queen's Wing was unexpectedly besieged and two queens, 1st Junior Jekerth (without her rider, Tanira (NPC), and the Senior queen Darnath and her Weyrwoman Yeresa, were taken Between never to return. With only two queens remaining, and both adolescent, the Weyr was desperate for leadership. After a Turn and a half, the Weyrwoman Ealaia's queen, Liath, was finally flown by bronze Pharath, the Weyrleader T?nian's dragon. They laid a clutch of 18 eggs. At first, one started to glow with a golden sheen and, as do all golds. Its mother greedily kept it lovingly nears her at all times. But, as the eggs began to harden, the egg turned a sickly shade of yellow-green and it no longer sparkled quite so, and Liath pushed it off to one side of the cavern, for her to watch, but not to hover over it so as she had done.
One day a sudden, mysterious fire broke out in the Candidate Barracks. Before anyone could escape, the doorframing and the ceiling supports gave way and, basically, the entire Barracks collapsed in onto itself. All the chosen Candidates died along with the Weyr's long-standing and well-loved Weyrleader. The Weyr was once again turned to mourning and many called this a terrible omen for the clutch. Pharath had, at first, declined to go Between before the clutch hatched, but Liath, not standing to see him in such pain, ordered him to end his own suffering, and so the bronze went Between forever before his last set of children had popped their shells.

Finally the eggs Hatched, 18 wonderful hatchlings, 1 Gold, 2 Bronze, 2 Brown, 5 Blue, and 8 Green graced the first truly happy occasion at Whitefalls in several Turns.  Unfortunately, even as the Weyrlings began to settle into their first day of a new life, tragedy struck as one of the Weyrlings went mad and her green Hatchling comitted suicide. A small plague spread through the Lower Caverns and the Drudges, several lives were lost when the Healers they desperately needed were sent for, but the sickness disappeared as suddenly as it had come. Those left sick were diagnosed with mild pneumonia, but that's not what had killed several Weyrfolk and left twice as many crippled for life. Weyrling Gold Aymeleth and her mute rider Ayla were the next to die, practicing going Between on their own in secret before their time. The Weyr mourned again, the murmurs of a cursed Weyr rippling through the North. To allieviate the grief, Narath, the WW2nd's gold, rose in her maiden flight and laid a successful clutch of another 18 eggs, revealing in its hatching 7 Green, 5 Blue, 3 Brown, 2 Bronze, and, to everyone's surprise, the hidden Gold Shannoth, who chose young Trinity as her rider and reset the balance, topping off a wonderful new wing of Candidates.

Time passed, the Turn turned, and on Turn's End, Queen Liath rose for her second time, caught by Wingleader R'nal's Krynth, making R'nal the Weyrleader and solidifying his relationship with Ealaia. Liath laid a clutch of a Pass record of 20 eggs! But they had not yet even finished hardening on the Grounds when tragedy struck. R?nal and Krynth took a Weyrling from the Weyr with them, and were lost returning. The weyrling?s blue also died.. Once again, Liath's eggs were Sire-less, Eala deprived of the man she loved, who was now dragonless and refusing to return to a place with so many memories, and the Weyr low on Candidates, caught off guard by shock.

The eggs hatched after an extra long time to harden, revealing 20 more new dragonets, each marvelous in their own respects, who chose 20 new people to be their riders. The number of weyrlings were growing steadily, another balm to soothe the wounds of the people of Whitefalls. Blaithin's gold Narath was flown by a strong brown, Charcoalth, whose rider, R'emdaz was thrust into the position of Weyrleader's 2nd, a difficult job to fill as there was no Weyrleader. The Holders of Dinin, Ierne, and Whitefalls Hold itself become more active with the Weyr and its doings.

Only months later, Ealaia and Liath transferred to the north, leaving Blaithin and R?emdaz to lead the Weyr. In her next flight, bronze Kaurith caught Narath, making T?tari Weyrleader and relieving R?emdaz of the position. At the end of that same Turn, Shannoth rose for her first flight, providing a new Weyleader?s second in J?dar and Callanath?and laying a gold egg in her first clutch!

Two turns later, when Narath laid another gold egg, Weyrwoman Blaithin made the decision to transfer Shannoth and her daughter, Licivath, out of the Weyr in order to spread the gene pool. On her next flight, Narath allowed a bronze other than Kaurith to fly her for the first time in three turns. No one knows what will happen next. The Weyr is at full strength, and has finally thrown off its reputation as a bad luck Weyr...or has it?
