Abdul Murad Khalid was forced to make a false declaration that Anwar had amassed RM3 billion overseas

KUALA LUMPUR (FAC News): According to an opposition Selangor State Assemblyman, Azmin Ali, the previous Deputy Governor of Malaysia's Central Bank, Bank Negara, has expressed regret at framing Anwar Ibrahim, the ousted Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia currently spending 15 years in jail on what his supporters claim are trumped-up charges. In 1999, Datuk Abdul Murad Khalid, then the Deputy Governor, had made a public "confession" that Anwar had amassed 3 billion Ringgit in twenty "Master Accounts" in overseas banks. The banks and bank account numbers were never identified though Murad claimed to have been part of this "conspiracy".

Even then most Malaysian's did not believe this confession as the story was full of holes and could not be substantiated with any evidence. The fact that no banks or account numbers were mentioned made the story even more unbelievable. Murad says he was forced to make this confession by Tengku Adnan Mansur, now a Deputy Minister in Dr Mahathir's government, and a Special Branch officer, Adam Bachik, who worked for Tan Sri Vincent Tan, a known Daim Zainuddin crony.

Daim recently resigned as Malaysia's Finance Minister and is said to be at loggerheads with the Prime Minister over UMNO's "missing" billions. Daim, then Treasurer of UMNO, the dominant partner in the ruling coalition, was the party's nominee for the mega-deals the party made. It is rumoured the billions made from these deals have not been properly accounted for and that it is difficult to establish what belongs to Daim and which is the party's. As it stands now, "officially", UMNO is "broke" and unless Daim returns what belongs to the party, but in his name, the party will remain penniless.

Azmin said Murad told him this in a recent meeting they had in Singapore. Murad said his public confession was read from a text prepared by Tengku Adnan and Adam Bachik. Murad added that after the draft confession was prepared he was brought to meet the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister then amended certain parts of the draft and asked that Murad read his confession at a press conference.

Murad said he regrets his actions and would like to redeem himself by coming clean with the whole story soon.
