Tembro Mandibular Joints

The lower jaw or mandible is located & controlled by several sets of muscles that allow it to perform its varied movements. The mandible joins the skull just in front of the ears or TMJ’s for short. Many if not most headaches stem from muscular tension, and much of that tension has been found to originate In the mouth irregularities of the TMJ often result in the "TMJ syndrome" of which head ache is a common symptoms. 90 percent of all headaches are muscle contraction headaches and a good portion of those is TMJ related.

Common indicators of the TMJ syndrome: -

  • Pain behind the eyes
  • In the sinuses & in the ears (without infection)
  • Chronic neck & shoulder pain
  • Loss of hearing
  • Stuffy sensation & noise or ringing in the ears
  • A ‘locked’ jaw muscle
  • Burning sensation in the throat, tongue & side of the nose & dry mouth

A most common symptom of the TMJ syndrome is chronic headache, ear & facial pain (in one side or both sides) temporo mandibular dysfunction (TMD) describes problems occurring in the muscles that move lower jaw & also in the temporo mandibular joints where the lower jaw connect to the skull. Although TMD is an orthopedic (joint muscles) medical problem, its management has historically been the province of dental profession and neither medical schools nor orthopedic specialty training programs have shown interest in teaching about it.

Even today, in modern medicine or alopathy, these problems were poorly understood with patients often passing from one doctor to another in an effort to find relief. Usually a patient with headache in TMJ syndrome to report having consulted general practitioners, chiropractors, orthopedists, gynecologists & plastic surgeons among others when the true nature of the problems goes undetected, many patients finally referred to a psychiatric office. Some times the only answer has been that the patient just has to "learn to live with it" or that surgery might help the situation.

Fortunately, in unani medicinal system it is clear that the malfunction is in the joint muscle complex is the true root cause. Treatment is aimed at eliminating inflammation with in the jaw joint; thus it leads to vanish headache & other related pains.
