Samwise Gamgee was the son of Hamfast Gamgee in TA 2980. Like his father, young Dam was a gardener to the Baggins Family. He was caught eavesdropping by Gandalf and therefore is chosen to accompany Frodo Baggins to his new house at Crickhollow. When the hobbits reached Rivendell, Sam was allowed to be part of the Fellowship. In the Mines of Moria, Sam killed his first Orc, though he recieved a deep cut on his head. When Frodo left the Company, Sam followed his master and insisted on going to Mordor too. It was Sam's inner strength that eneble Frodo to reach Mount Doom. When Gollum leads them through the Pass of Cirith, Sam beat Gollum when Shelob attacked. After Shelob's attack Sam thought his friend was dead, and he took up Sting and accepted the burden of the Ring. He moratlly wounded the giant spider, and then went onto the Tower of Cirith Ungol where Sam single-handedly defeated Gorbag the Orc, along with several Uark-hai.Sam accomplished something no other being in Middle Earth had; he voluntarily returned the ring to Frodo. During the scouring of the Shire Sam played an important role. Afterwards he married Rosie Cotton, and Frodo left Sam Bag End when he went across the Sea with Bilbo and Gandalf. After Rosie died, Sam travelled over the Sea as the last of the Ringbearers. In the movie Sam is played by Sean Astin. |
