Resilient Blackhawks Battle Back for 6-4 Win
September 6, 2004

After jumping to an early 1-0 lead, the Santa Clara Blackhawks had to rally from behind on three separate occasions before finally prevailing against the tough Bakersfield Dragons, 6-4, in the Blackhawks' final game of the End of Summer Hockey Fest.  The tournament did not feature a championship game, but if it had, today's victory would have propelled Santa Clara into the championship game against a Huntington Beach Sun Devils team that also went 4-0-0.  Today's contest had the feel of a championship game, featuring four ties and several momentum swings.  Several Blackhawks players were instrumental in the win including Patrick Castagna (one goal & two assists), Kyle Nunn (one goal & one assist), and Billy Kiernan (one goal & one assist).  Mitch Venosta, Shaun Pienkos, and Phillip Wong also contributed a goal apiece to help spur the Hawks' attack.

Santa Clara got on the board early after a pestering defensive effort by Kevin O'Brien resulted in a turnover to Patrick Castagna just inside the Blackhawks' defensive zone.  Castagna sped down the ice and was tripped up as he moved in on the goaltender looking to stuff one past him.  The puck ricocheted off the post and as the goaltender swept his leg pads back to try and cover a puck he couldn't see, he was met by the tripped-up Castagna.  The goalie, Castagna, and the puck all collapsed into the net.  After everyone was cleared away, the official ruled that the goal counted and Santa Clara led, 1-0.  Bakersfield then tied it less than two minutes later after a clearing attempt was intercepted by an onrushing Dragons' skater who converted on an open, point-blank shot.  That would be all the scoring in the period although both teams put together short flurries in the final two minutes.  Santa Clara goaltender Willie Matthews made two big saves at 1:22, just seconds after Kyle Nunn's backhander slipped just wide of an open net.

The Dragons were breathing fire in the second period, as evidenced by their 12-7 shot advantage.  They wasted no time getting started, firing a barrage of three shots at Willie Matthews just 45 seconds into the period.  But Matthews made the stops and stemmed the tide.  At 9:29, the Dragons scored on a shot from inside the left faceoff dot to grab their first lead of the game at 2-1.  Bakersfield then went on the first of what would turn out to be three power plays.  Santa Clara killed all three of them, which proved to be critical given that the Blackhawks earned zero power plays of their own, an extremely rare occurrence at this level of hockey.  For the tournament, the Blackhawks sucessfully killed all thirteen opposing power plays.  Santa Clara managed to tie the game at 3:11. Mitch Venosta won a battle for the puck along the boards in the Dragons' end, tipping the puck over to Patrick Castagna who was near the left faceoff dot,  Castagna sent a backhand, give-&-go return pass to the front of the net and Venosta ripped it short-side for the score.  Once again, Bakersfield came right back to retake the lead.  This time it took them just 32 seconds to score after an initial shot was deflected by  a Santa Clara defenseman off the post and back out front.  The deflection was pounced on by a Dragons player who converted to make it 3-2.  The period would end that way, setting the stage for an exciting final twelve minutes of play.

Santa Clara closed the second period killing a penalty, and they were shorthanded again at 11:05 of the final period.  After killing both Dragons' power plays, Santa Clara went into overdrive.  They tied the contest at 3-3 after Kyle Yedlicka pushed his way along the side boards, sending a pass ahead to Kyle NunnNunn then sent a one-touch, no-look pass across the crease to Billy Kiernan, and Kiernan made the highlight-reel pass count by stuffing the shot home.  But for the third time, Bakersfield responded with a quick goal to retake the lead, this time waiting just seventeen seconds to score when a Bakersfield player won a scramble for the puck and then found an opening inside.  Santa Clara could have called it quits right there, but instead they sucked it up and toughened their resolve.  Just inside the six-minute mark, Billy Kiernan's backcheck resulted in a turnover along the side boards to Kyle Nunn. Nunn tipped it ahead along the boards and chased it down at the Dragons' blueline, then moved in through the slot and wristed a riser up and over the shoulder of the goalie, lighting the lamp and tying the score at four apiece.  Santa Clara then took the lead on a great individual effort at 4:04.  But this individual effort was still a result of good teamwork.  A backchecking Dustin Holt lifted the stick of a Dragons skater who was carrying the puck into the Santa Clara zone, and fellow blueliner Shaun Pienkos swept in and took the puck away.  Pienkos swept wide and then made a little inside-outside move at center ice to get around a defender.  Pienkos advanced on the partial breakaway and converted on a shot that just trickled over the goal line.  Santa Clara then went into defensive mode, but put the game away for good with another goal at 1:25.  This scoring effort started when the Dragons' goaltender took a one-handed swat at a loose puck, sending it straight back up the middle instead of toward the side boards.  The puck fluttered through the air and hit Nick Costa just inside the blueline before falling back to the ice. Patrick Castagna picked it up there and took a shot that deflected off a stick and inside to Nick CostaCosta was in too deep to get off a shot, but he corralled the puck and sent a no-look backhand pass out front and through the crease that hit the tape of Phillip Wong'sWong whisked a shot past the goaltender to make it 6-4 at 1:25, sealing the victory for the Hawks.

It was a bittersweet tournament for the Blackhawks, winning all four games but losing defenseman Chase Brevoort to injury in the process.  Hopefully, Chase will make a speedy recovery and be able to rejoin the squad later in the year.  Santa Clara now begins NORCAL preseason action with games against Fresno and Tri-Valley next weekend.

Third-Period Rally Tames Wild, 3-1
September 5, 2004

In the third game of the End of Summer Hockey Fest, Santa Clara met up with the Inland Valley Wild, a merger of the Desert Coyotes club and the Ontario Senators.  In a battle that was not decided until the final minute of play, the Blackhawks came out on top, 3-1.  Kevin O'Brien, Patrick Castagna and Billy Kiernan tallied the goals, with assists coming from Castagna, Kiernan, Mitch Venosta, Phillip Wong and Kyle YedlickaDevon Luna had a strong game in net, stopping 23 out of 24 shots.  It was a costly win for the Blackhawks, as defenseman Chase Brevoort broke his wrist in the final minute of play.  Santa Clara will need to step it up defensively in Brevoort's absence, and they'll be tested right away in tomorrow's contest against the Bakersfield Dragons, a team which played in the Midget-A CAHA championship tournament last season.

The first period of play featured plenty of action but no goals.  Santa Clara failed on two power plays, while the Coyotes were unable to convert on one of their own.  Kyle Yedlicka just missed wide on a shot at 8:04.  Patrick Castagna was later stymied on a quality shot during a power play at 4:10.  The Blackhawks finished the period with a flurry, but Yedlicka, Kyle Nunn and Castagna were rejected in succession on saves at the 0:40 mark and the period ended in a scoreless tie.

It took a fluke goal to finally open the scoring and it happened during an Inland Valley power play at 9:29 of the second period.  A Wild skater passed the puck off the boards near their own blueline, and it slid over to Kevin O'Brien at the redline.  O'Brien one-timed it back toward the Wild end of the ice, but an Inland Valley skater made an ill-advised play, attempting to knock it out of the air.  Instead, he redirected O'Brien's shot and it whistled past the out-of-position netminder to make it 1-0.  The Blackhawks continued to apply pressure, but were unable to extend their lead despite a nice move and pass from Patrick Castagna to Kyle Yedlicka, resulting in a shot by Yedlicka that was stopped at 6:04.  Inland Valley went on a power play at 3:41, but then committed a minor penalty of their own at 3:06 to kill their own power play.  The Wild then evened the score on the ensuing 4-on-4, making it 1-1 at 2:21.  The period would end that way after Phillip Wong missed just wide on an open net at 1:24.

The final period featured thirteen penalties, though only one power play for the Wild and two for Santa Clara. Patrick Castagna had the best scoring chance in the first half of the period when he found an opening while the Hawks were shorthanded at 8:08.  But Castagna was robbed and the score remained tied.  Santa Clara's Devon Luna had to come up with two, big shorthanded saves of his own during a Blackhawks power play, at 6:10.  After being rejected on at least three opportunities earlier in the game, Patrick Castagna was rewarded for his strong play, nailing the game winner at 5:12, just 23 seconds after the Hawks' power play expired.  After Castagna dropped to the ice in a battle for possession in the Wild 's corner, Billy Kiernan picked up the loose puck and skated around the back of the net before centering it out front.  Mitch Venosta's one-timer was turned back, but the rebound slid out to Castagna who had gotten up to join the fray.  As he moved in toward the crease, the puck found his stick and Castagna buried it.  With five minutes remaining, there was still ample time left on the clock for the Wild to come back.  Devon Luna did his part to tame the Wild, snatching a shot through traffic with the big chopper at 3:42.  At 1:05, Inland Valley picked up another penalty and Santa Clara finally put the game in the bag on a power play goal from Billy Kiernan.  On a Santa Clara dump-in, Kyle Yedlicka grabbed possession near the side boards and skated into the slot before shooting the puck. Phillip Wong got a piece of it and then the biscuit slid back out to Kiernan who put it into the back of the net to close out the scoring.

Santa Clara finishes up the tournament with a game against the Bakersfield Dragons on Labor Day morning.  Bakersfield gave Santa Clara's 2003-2004 Midget-A team all they could handle last year in a game that the Blackhawks did not win until late in overtime.  While both clubs have changed personnel, the Dragons are sure to put a solid team on the ice.

Santa Clara Sinks Pesky Mariners, 4-0
September 4, 2004

With an impressive win under their belts, the Santa Clara Blackhawks figured to make quick work of the Ventura Mariners' 16 & under team in tonight's second game of the End of Summer Hockey Fest Tournament.  Although the Mariners were clearly outclassed, as evidenced by a 41-6 final shot count, they played an energetic game and trailed by only 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after two.  But Ventura was unable to mount any consistent offensive attack and Santa Clara eventually shipwrecked the competition.  Phillip Wong scored twice to lead the Blackhawks, with Kyle Yedlicka and Patrick Castagna notching the other goals.  Defensemen Chase Brevoort tallied assists on the team's first two goals and Castagna, Mitch Venosta, Kyle Nunn, and Nick Costa each contributed an assist apiece.  Goaltender Devon Luna was largely untested, but he came away with the Blackhawks' second consecutive shutout, giving the squad a 2-0-0 record for the tournament heading into tomorrow's contest against the Inland Empire Wild (a merger of the Desert Coyotes and the Ontario Senators).

The Mariners largely withstood a Blackhawks first period assault in which Santa Clara outshot Ventura 13-1.  But Santa Clara's passing game was a little sloppy and they were unable to capitalize until the 6:42 mark, when Kyle Yedlicka scored on the power play.  Ventura picked up penalties at 9:26 and at 7:28, and the Blackhawks eventually converted after some solid cycling between Patrick Castagna and Kyle Yedlicka.  After grabbing a rebound of his own shot, Castagna carried the biscuit around the net and fed defenseman Chase Brevoort at the left point.  Brevoort walked in a few steps and fed the puck down low to Yedlicka. Yedlicka stuffed it into the goalie's pads and then swatted it past the netminder on the rebound.  That would be all the scoring in the period, thanks in part to effective penalty kills by the Hawks at 4:01 and 0:23.

Santa Clara finished out the penalty kill to begin the second period with goaltender Devon Luna contributing a kick save at 11:10.  The Blackhawks were then unable to convert on their third power play of the game, which came at 9:33.  The Mariners continued to hang around, despite being outshot again in the second period, this time by an 11-2 margin.  But the Blackhawks were finally able to get one past the netminder at 3:29 to take a 2-0 lead.  Phillip Wong started the play with a faceoff win in the Mariners' zone. Chase Brevoort made a nice play to hold the zone off the faceoff win, feeding Mitch Venosta on the left boards. Venosta made a perfect touch pass off the boards to Wong, who then moved across the slot and rifled a shot that slipped through the pipe protector's wicket.  Santa Clara finished the period killing minor penalties at 3:17 and 1:06.  The penalties produced a brief, five-on-three advantage for the Mariners, but they were unable to sustain any serious pressure thanks to a strong penalty-kill effort, particularly from defensemen Kevin O'Brien, Shaun Pienkos, and Derek Fredericks.  The period ended with Santa Clara up, 2-0.

The dominance of the Blackhawks escalated in the third period.  The Mariners were once again outshot, this time by a 16-3 margin.  But the real difference was in the physical play, which Santa Clara also dominated.  Of the sixteen hits they recorded in this contest, nine were delivered in the final period.  The aggressive play helped to open up the ice and that enabled the Blackhawks to light the lamp twice more in the final frame.  Santa Clara's third goal came after Kyle Nunn controlled a faceoff in the Ventura zone, dumping it down low where Patrick Castagna chased it down and moved it over to the left side boards. Castagna then maneuvered back into the slot and snapped a sizzler past the Mariners' goaltender for the score.  Santa Clara's final goal came on a nifty give and go between Phillip Wong and Nick CostaWong started the sequence when he grabbed a loose puck behind his own net. Wong moved up ice and fed the biscuit ahead to Costa. Costa raced around a defender and and took off with Wong on a breakaway.  Waiting until the last possible moment, Costa slid the puck across the crease to Wong, who tapped it home for the score.

Santa Clara next faces the Inland Valley Wild in a Sunday evening contest.  The Wild split their first two games of the tournament, falling to the Beach City Lightning 3-0, before nipping the La Jolla Jaguars 16A squad, 3-1.

Blackhawks Open Play with Crisp, 5-0 Win
September 3, 2004

Coming off of State Championships in CAHA's Midget-A and Midget-B divisions, the 2004-05 Blackhawks' club has a tough act to follow.  With just five practices under their belt, the Midget-A squad got off to a good start, shutting down the La Jolla Jaguars, 5-0 in the opening game for both teams in the End of Summer Hockey Fest Tournament.  The offense was led by multi-point games from Patrick Castagna, Nick Costa and Phillip WongCastagna recorded two goals and two assists, while Costa and Wong each notched a goal and two assists.  Three of the four Blackhawks defensemen got on the scoresheet as well, with Chase Brevoort netting the opening goal of the game and Shawn Pienkos and Derek Fredericks each picking up an assist.  Defensively, Santa Clara held the Jaguars to just fourteen shots.  Goaltender Willie Matthews was perfect between the pipes and defenseman Kevin O'Brien led the hit squad with five pummelings.

The teams came out cautiously in a first period that produced only eight shots including six from the Blackhawks.  Santa Clara got on the board at 7:51 on a sweet put-back by Chase Brevoort.  The play was started by Patrick Castagna, who tipped a pass off the boards in his own end up to Nick CostaCosta raced up the right wing and sent in a shot from the slot that produced a juicy rebound for the perfectly positioned Brevoort, who ripped it home.  Although goaltender Willie Matthews was only tested twice in the period, he was called upon to make a heads-up stop at 4:29, and Matthews delivered.  The first penalty of the game was whistled at 3:41 and the Blackhawks power play unit converted on their inaugural man advantage just two seconds before the penalty expired.  With the teams battling for possession along the side boards in the La Jolla zone, Nick Costa gained control and spotted Shawn Pienkos with a pinpoint pass. Pienkos grabbed the biscuit and moved out front, sending a backhander toward the net.  Phillip Wong was positioned in front and he deflected Pienkos' shot out of the air and past the netminder to make it 2-0, a score that held through the balance of the period.

Santa Clara doubled its lead in the second period.  The first goal came after Derek Fredericks made a nice play to hold the zone on a La Jolla clearing attempt.  Fredericks intercepted the clearing pass and sent a quick shot toward the net that sailed high.  The puck rebounded off the boards and out to Patrick Castagna who zipped it into the open side of the net to make it 3-0 at 8:53.  It took Santa Clara just over a minute to put the game away with their fourth goal of the night.  After finishing on the previous goal, Castagna started this one with a outlet pass to Phillip WongWong's one-touch pass to the middle found the stick of Nick Costa. Costa moved down the left wing and then snapped one toward the net that deflected slightly off a defender's stick before slipping through the goaltender's five hole for the score.  There would be no other scoring during the period, although there was no shortage of shooting.  Santa Clara outshot their SCAHA counterparts 10-9 in the period, and La Jolla would get several good scoring chances after Santa Clara had extended its lead to 4-0. Willie Matthews stopped each advance, with his best efforts coming off a tip at 3:55, and a sequence of shots while facing a Jaguars power play at 2:40. Matthews added a solid kick save at 2:19 and the period ended with the Hawks holding firmly to their 4-0 advantage.

The Blackhawks added the exclamation point at 5:50 of the final frame. Phillip Wong started the play with a pass around the boards that Nick Costa tipped ahead to Patrick Castagna. Castagna moved deep into the Jaguars zone and scored from an improbable angle deep inside the right slot.

It was a good first effort for this newly formed team of Hawks.  They next play the Ventura Mariners A16 squad.  Due to a shortage of A16 teams, each of those clubs are playing one game against A18 competition.  The Mariners, 4-0 losers earlier today in a match-up against La Jolla A16, has the misfortune of drawing the defending Midget A&B State Champions.
