The Healing Grove Bookstore
Many people have asked us to recommend books and other resources for recovery. Others have asked for books on Wicca, paganism, and women's spirituality. We have joined Amazon.com's affiliate program to bring you the books you've asked for. While we support local, independent bookstores, we realize they are not always convenient, especially to rural dwellers. Additionally, shopping online provides privacy. If you shop Amazon.com regularly, please consider visiting Amazon through us. Your Amazon.com purchase supports the Healing Grove's ministry for survivors. The books recommended below have been read and used by Rev. Goodwin. If you would like to recommend a book, simply write a paragraph or two about your experience with the book and email it to us. There are many worthwhile books out there which we have not had a chance to review. These
recommendations are personal opinion only. Every survivor has different needs and may not find every book helpful. We'd like to know which books work for you, so feel free to let us know if these recommendations are helpful to you.

Books for Survivors and Their Allies

The Courage to Heal Ellen Bass and Laura Davis
This book literally saves lives. It is absolutely the best resource for survivors of incest and child sexual abuse. It is well written, well researched, and full of helpful exercises and advice. A large book, it is best taken in small bites. It includes a chapter for loved ones of survivors. If you only buy one book, this is it.

The Courage to Heal WorkbookLaura DavisThis book is a companion volume to
The Courage to Heal. It contains many useful exercises. They can be done in conjunction with therapy or a self help group, or even on your own. Several online support groups use work through the exercises together.

Beginning to Heal Ellen Bass and Laura Davis
A smaller, gentler introduction to recovery work for incest and sexual abuse survivors. Many people prefer to start here, then go on to The Courage to Heal when they feel ready.

 Allies in HealingLaura Davis
I have purchased this book for my nonsurvivor friends. My friend "Ted" said this book saved his life when he was dating a survivor. He had blamed himself for problems in the relationship which were really caused by aftereffects of abuse. He learned to stop blaming himself, support his partner, and get support for himself. Again, this book should be taken in small bites. Nonsurvivors are often shocked, even overwhelmed, by what survivors go through. If you have a survivor in your life, you need this book.

 Secret SurvivorsE. Sue Blume
Includes the Incest Survivors' Aftereffects Checklist. Another classic work. Blume is one of the best writers and researchers in the field. If you found the Checklist helpful, you may enjoy this book. The link above is for the recent reissue of Secret Survivors. The link below is for the original paperback edition. The contents are the same, but it has a more
affordable price.

Women Who Love Too MuchRobin Norwood
This groundbreaking work helped me pick up the pieces when my first marriage fell apart. It explained why he acted the way he did, why I was attracted to men like my ex, and how to avoid them in the future. Someone had given it to me simply because I was a feminist. My husband found the book and hid it on me! After he left, I found it in his dresser. I read it and cried like I had never cried before. I felt like it was written just for me. I stopped dating losers, and now have satisfying relationships. I believe every woman should read this book. The link below is for the audio version.
