Mother Teresa - Humanitarian

1910 - 1997

When we stop to think about Mother Teresa, we think of words like; poor, vow of poverty, squallor and slums. I would hope that we would also use words like; Christ-like, love, obedient, faithful, worthy, humble and blessed, for Mother Teresa was all of these and more.

Mother Teresa spent her life giving love to those who were societies outcasts. She lived a life that few of us would dare to try. She lived a life that exemplifies the love of Jesus Christ.

I can not help but question the timing of her death. Is it a co-incidence that her passing so quickly followed the death of Princess Diana? Is it a co-incidence that her life was such a contrast to that of the Princess? I don't believe so. Mother Teresa was so ill last year, being on the brink of death several times, and yet her time to leave us was not to happen until now.

I believe that the lives of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana are a picture for us to learn from. These two women, so different, had one thing in common. They both loved those in this world who are unlovable, those with aids, those with leprosy, those living in poverty and squallor. When you think of love, the kind of love that is described in 1 Corinthians 13, you will see that these two women gave that kind of love to those they lived with and those they worked with. Neither of these women were afraid to touch those who most of us would be afraid to even be close to. Love kept these women reaching out, giving of themselves, to those less fortunate them themselves.

The lives of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana were also ones of great contrast. One so very poor, the sum of her estate being two robes and one wash bucket; the other being so very rich, the sum of her estate being vast. One lived among the poorist of the poor; the other lived among queens and kings. One was able to keep her life and her work very low profile; the other was able to turn her profile and status to benefit her work.

So what can we learn from these women! I believe we can learn that whatever our status in life, if we are willing, God can use us to minister to those in need. I believe we can learn that our worth does not have to be measured by the amount of our estate. Being incredible wealthy or even royal is not the greatest treasure in life. ~Proverbs 22.1 "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed better than silver or gold".

Mother Teresa patterened her life after Jesus Christ. If you do not know Jesus, I would encourage you to investigate Who Jesus Is.

As you take time to reflect on the life of Mother Teresa, take time to reflect on your life, your vision, your focus. We are all terminal, we will all face death some day. How do you want others to view your life?

~Therefore, as we have opportunity,
let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10~
