Notes

He lived on "the old place" on Latimore Creek until 1833, when he moved to Perry County, PA, near Newport, on the Juniata, at the mouth of Big Buffalo Creek. In 1836, he moved 3 miles southeast of Newport, on the old Beelen place, where in 1836, his house was burned and many of his good destroyed. In 1839, he moved to an adjoining farm, the Powers place. In 1840, he moved to Middle Ridge, near Gantt's schoolhouse. In 1841, he moved to Raccoon Valley to a farm belonging to Samuel Black. In 1847, he moved his family, except the eldest three children who were married, to Peoria County, Illinois, near Smithville. Here he bought a farm of 120 acres of land. In 1862, his wife died and several years later he sold his farm and went to live with his children. He was a man of medium height, five feet seven or eight inches tall, very full in the chest and broad across the shoulders, heavy set and strongly built, with great vitality; hair quite dark and features marked; nose inclined to be broad toward the lower end, and rather large, but not long. His whole build is German in character, modified by his American birth, residence and education. Temper rather irascible. His education in the comon branches, spelling, reading, writing and arithmetic, good, far above the average. He has always been a hard-working, economical man, but not inclined to any kind of speculation; strictly honest and punctual to pay all his debts, having a dread of going in debt. In politics, he was a Whig until 1856. He went to the Democrats when the Whig party dissolved. His mother belonged to the old Dunkard church and he sympathized with them but did not join a church until in advanced age he joined with the Christian Union Church at Smithville. He is buried in the Smithville Cemetery, Peoria, Illinois
