Progress Report
Kappa-Epsilon Academy
April & May 1999
Our progress through the months of April and May 1999:
Math:
Kevin is continuing with his Saxon Algebra 2. Some lessons were; advanced substitution,radical denominators, gas laws, the quadratic formula, negative angles, uniform motion, factorable denominators, negative vectors and the slope formula.
Erin continues with Saxon Algebra 1/2. Her lessons included; proportions with mixed numbers, variations of percent equations, visualizing signed numbers, powers and roots of fractions, cylinders, algebraic addition, implied ratios and rate problems as ratios
Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary we are continuing our weekly lists of 15 words. We will finish the year with list 48 !!
We are also continuing Greek and Latin root words-to help with our vocabulary skills-the words we've learned are--
- inter- between, aming, amid
- techne- art, skill (Greek)
- ars, artis- art, skill (Latin)
- bios- life
- vivo, victum- live
- mikros- small
- megas- great, large, big (Greek)
- magnus- great, large, big (Latin)
Writing Strands:
This year we have selected Writing Strands Series(Level 5 & 6) from the National Writing Institute to help with our creative writing. Kevin and Erin will be writing an original one-person drama for this semester, it must be 10-15 minutes long and will be performed at the end of the semester (June).
Reading: with the completion of their chosen biographies Kevin and Erin have finished with written book reports for this year, however they did give an oral book report at our support group meeting this month. We also had a poetry recitation for National Poetry Month (April)
Social Studies: In Social Studies
�Kevin and Erin are beginning with our study of North American geography, We will continue this through next year, but are getting a head start. We will study one state each week, learning about demographics, crops and industrial production, terrain, state flags, trends and changes and state history. We will travel alphabetically, from Alabama to Colorado in the next few weeks. Each week we will cook something from the area we are learning about....mmmmm !
Science: This year our science course is Biology.
Kevin and Erin studied reptilia (including a frog dissection on-line), aves (birds), mammalia, famous biologists, chordates and finish up with as much as we can get to in the human body (skeleton, muscles and nervous system).
Bible Studies: We are discussing the Book of Matthew as a family Bible study. Dad is leading our study group. In April and May we have learned:
- Matthew 26:1-16--plot to kill Jesus, Judas agrees to betray
- Matthew 26:17-56--Passover, the Last Supper, Jesus's prayer, betrayal and arrest in Gethsemane
- Matthew 26:57-75--facing the Sanhedrin, Peter's denial
- Matthew 27:1-32--Judas's death, facing Pilate, the soldiers mock Jesus
- Matthew 27:33-56--Jesus's crucifixion, death and burial
- Matthew 28--He is RISEN !, the women worship, the Great Commision
Computer: Kevin and Erin continue work on their homepages.

Sign Language: In ASL we continue to review our words and signs: To reinforce what we've been studting, Kevin and Erin are now performing 5 sentences each week for ASL recitation.
Special Events in April & May:
We had some wonderful field trips and fun events in these two months ! A fascinating and educational Reptile show was the highlight of April -- for pictures and a link to NERD -- please visit our Hanscom Support Group page. We also had a Science Fair and Living Book reports with our support group (also on the Hanscom page). Erin went to a weekend camp with the Calvary Chapel Youth group in May, and had a wonderful time :) We also had Mom-mom and Al come up to visit and to take our kitties home to Pennsylvania with them -- now we are getting ready for busy couple of months with our big move & Dad's retirement (whee) !!
