It is hard to believe that we are in our third year of homeschool ! We are starting this year in our new home in Pennsylvania:
Math:
Kevin will continue with his Saxon Algebra 2. He will spend our first "semester" finishing up in this book before moving on to Saxon Advanced Mathematics.
Erin will do some work in her Saxon Algebra 1/2, but she will also be using a new curriculum "Key to Algebra" for this year.

Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary we are continuing with our weekly lists of 15 words. Each week we find the definitions of words such as amelioration, histrionic, and propinquity. We then write sentences or paragraphs using the words and on Friday we have a test on the words.

In Language Arts we will be focusing mainly on Creative Writing this year. We have 2 resources to help us, Writing Strands (Level 6 & 7) from the National Writing Institute and Write Source 2000 , a guide to writing, thinking and learning. Both Kevin and Erin will print out weekly papers on varied and unlimited subjects, they will be encouraged to write without "prompts" and to branch out into poetry, prose and dramatic skits. Grammar, usage and spelling will be checked, but building a love for writing is of highest importance here.

We are also continuing Greek and Latin root words-to help with our vocabulary skills-the words we've learned in September are--

- magnus -- big, large, great (Latin)
 - pater, patris -- father
 - mater, matris -- mother

Reading: Kevin and Erin- will again turn in regular Book Reports, but these will be less "formal" than before. We will be keeping a list of books read each month

    Kevin-
- The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern by Lillian Jackson Braun
 - The Cat Who Could Read Backwards by Lillian Jackson Braun
 - The Cat Who Talked to Ghosts by Lillian Jackson Braun

   Erin-

 - Family Secrets by ?? Zach

Social Studies: In Social Studies we begin with a review of Africa. We have a blank map to fill in for a little "refresher" course. We will then finish with North American geography (US States & Canada). We will have a short unit study on "The Civil War in Pennsylvania" later in the year (most likely spring), including a field trip to Gettysburg.

Science: We are almost finished our science course in Biology.
Kevin and Erin are learning about the systems of the human body, with the "endocrine" system first on the list and respiratory system next... Later in the year we will begin a study of Geology , using the LifePac series.

Bible Studies: We are discussing the Book of Genesis as a family Bible study. Dad is leading our study group. In September we have learned:

- Genesis 23:1 to 25:18 -- Death of Sarah, a Wife for Isaac, Ishmael's Geneology
 - Genesis 25:19-34 & 26 -- Esau & Jacob are Born, Esau sells his Birthright, Isaac and Abimelech

Computer: Kevin and Erin continue work on their homepages.
Kevin -- is renovating his pages at Paladin Castle
Erin -- has added a "characters" page in Erin's House

The Fine Arts:
Erin,
Kevin and Mom are attending a Shakespeare seminar on Saturdays, where we began with a study of Romeo and Juliet . We watched the film and discussed our "fears" of Shakespeare, and we will be doing some short scenes from the play.

 - Erin and Mom -- Act 2 Scene 5; Juliet and her Nurse
