Our Homeschool
Progress Report

  Kappa-Epsilon Academy

October 1999

The pool is closed up, the leaves are beginning to turn, the days are getting shorter, and we are settling into our school routine for this year, experimenting with Independent Study and a less-structured schedule:
Math:
Kevin continues with his Saxon Algebra 2. He also supplements this with higher-level Key to Geometry workbooks. He is not happy when you mention anything to do with "Trig" to him right now--but he's trying. His test scores have been great so far :)
Erin has been focusing mainly on her "Key to Algebra" workbooks so far. She also does some of the Geometry pages for a little variety. We've been using Key to Algebra pages as weekly tests, and she's done very well to date.

Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary we are continuing with our weekly lists of 15 words. We are all quick to point out vocabulary words that we happen to come across in books, newspaper articles, lessons, movies, or on TV (not so many here *G*)

In Language Arts we are focusing mainly on Creative Writing this year. Kevin has been working on trying a new type of writing, moving away a bit from his Redwall fiction. Erin has written some "storyboards" & character descriptions for a Sailor-Moon type show.

We are also continuing Greek and Latin root words-to help with our vocabulary skills-the words we've learned in September are--

- frater, fratris -- brother
 - demos -- people (Greek)
 - populus -- people (Latin)
 - polis -- city (Greek)

Reading: Kevin and Erin- will again turn in Book Reports, but these will be less "formal" than before. We will be keeping a list of books read each month

The Fine Arts:
We have an opportunity to attend some more Shakespeare seminars on Saturdays throughout this month, the next study we will attend focuses on As You Like It
...
This past weekend we watched the 1936 film of As You Like It, a "classic" starring a very young Laurence Olivier. A nicely done movie, allthough they did cut some of Touchstone's better scenes.
As "homework" we are to work on learning favorite or confusing scenes, Kevin is practicing Jacque's "All the world's a stage..." speech (Act 2, Scene 7), while Kevin, Mom and Erin may do the banishment scene with the Duke Frederick, Celia and Rosalinde (Act I, Scene 3)

Sign Language: In ASL we will be focusing on signing proficiency and strengthening our vocabulary.
Both Kevin and Erin have translated songs into ASL and will perform them for the family.

- Kevin -- I Will Trust In You

 - Erin -- Because You Loved Me
