Our Homeschool
Progress Report
Kappa-Epsilon Academy
November 1999
November can be a busy and hectic month, what with family visits, that HUGE dinner at Thanksgiving time and so many plans to make for the fast-approaching Christmas holiday. It's easy to let up on our work if we're not careful, but if we work together and everyone pitches in, school won't get lost in the shuffle.
Math:
Kevin is almost finished with his Saxon Algebra 2 book. He's definitely getting into the tougher equations now, but he's hanging in there. Some things he's worked on this month are: probablility, set-builder notation, logarithmic equations, absolute value inequalities, age word problems, Venn diagrams and advanced geometry.
Erin continues work with both Key to Algebra and Key to Geometry. She has completed the 1st Algebra book in the series, scoring 99% on the final test. Some work she's done in November are: review of circles & finding the perimeter of geometric figures, variables, negatives and positives, adding like and unlike terms, exponents and evaluating expressions.
Vocabulary, Language Arts: In Vocabulary we are continuing with our weekly lists of 15 words. As an interesting sidenote--we have found quite a few of our vocabulary words in the Shakespearean plays we're reading for our Saturday discussion groups ! (Remuneration ! O that's the Latin word for three farthings: three farthings, remuneration. Love's Labour's Lost, Act III, Scene 1)
In Language Arts we are focusing mainly on Creative Writing this year. Kevin has branched out into play writing and we look forward to further adventures of "Don Fromaggio de Bologna". Erin's story has tons of characters who all seem to worry more about their clothes, hair, and who's the cutest than about anything else *G*
We are also continuing Greek and Latin root words-to help with our vocabulary skills-the words we've learned in September are--
- urbs, urbis -- city (Latin)
- pathos -- feeling, suffering
- autos -- self
