Fort Barrancas

Anita and Katy at fort We did manage to get around to see a few other sites. One of my favorites and a must see while we were there was the fort where I used to do volunteer service, Ft. Barrancas. A good friend of mine was a park ranger and suckered my mother and I into helping out on weekends. It was definitely a different feeling walking in there as a grown woman with a child of her own than as a giggly teen parked behind the information desk. Katy's impressions of the fort? "It's toooo hot!" :-)
Well, there was no denying that it was hot, hot, hot. We barely made it through the fort without having to be rescued by a lifeflight copter. Thank goodness for water fountains. It was days like that one that made me grateful to live in the 20th century. John and Katy on fort steps
Katy and I inside Ft. Barrancas I was very disheartened to see all the graffiti that had been scrawled on the inside walls of the fort in the eight years since I'd seen it. The inside of the fort didn't alleviate the heat much...
...but it was enough to inspire a little horseplay! horseplay in the fort
