The Sia House

Once upon a time, there was a family named Sia who lived quite peacefully deep in the forests of Vancouvia. Although they did not possess the riches of kings, they were happy, for they had everything they wanted.

Lightning

O
ne day, as the three children were playing in the forest, like they usually did in those carefree days, thunder rumbled and lightning struck. The children were very afraid and also mystified, for they had never heard thunder or seen lightning before. They were transfixed, rooted to the very spot on which they were standing. Little did they know that thunder and lightning were not the only dangers they would face that day.

The sound of footsteps woke them from their trance-like state. They saw in front of them a beautiful maiden with long flowing black hair. Her smile was most enchanting, and her eyes seemed to gleam. She beckoned to the children, "Come with me, I will take you home." The children, innocent and trusting, followed her through the dense forests. The maiden led them to a cave, and told them, "Wait here until the storm ceases. Then I will take you home." She went outside, and the children did as they were told.

M
eanwhile, back in the Sia house, Father and Mother were getting worried. They had heard the thunder and seen the lightning; they had never encountered a storm of this magnitude before. They called out to the children, but received no answer. Father could not take it anymore. He said, "I'm going out to look for our children." Mother replied, "Then I'm going with you." So the two of them set out into the driving rain.

T
heir search was long and hard, but they refused to give up. Finally, they came across the mouth of a cave. They entered, and – lo and behold – the children! They exchanged tears, hugs, and kisses, and were about to leave for home. But the maiden appeared from nowhere and blocked the exit.

The maiden/witch

"
Who are you?" Father asked. The children replied, "She's the one who saved us from the storm, Father. She led us to this cave." Mother suddenly grabbed Father's arm and paled. She choked out, "She's a witch! She's the witch of the forest!" The children clung to Father and Mother. The witch, now revealed to them in her true form, cackled, "You are mine! You cannot leave this place!" She added in a triumphant tone, "Now I will have the Key to Happiness!"

U
sing a magic spell, she tied the family up. She took the Key hanging from Father's belt and left. The children wailed, for they thought they have lost the Key to Happiness. Father and Mother consoled them and said, "Children, the evil witch may think that what she holds is the Key to Happiness. But no, that's only the key to our house. Happiness is not found in the cold stone, bricks, and stucco of our house. It lies inside our hearts. As long as we stay together, we have happiness. Always remember that."

T
hey managed to escape from the cave and off they went in search of a new home.
