Considerations Before Purchasing
A Pet Bird

By Wayne Kendrick

Parrots make wonderful pets! They are playful, inquisitive, beautiful, intelligent, loving creatures that can bring a lifetime of companionship and enjoyment into their owner's world. Besides that, what other pet can talk back to you?

However, parrots can also be noisy, destructive, messy, and very demanding to an uninformed or uncommitted owner.

Before purchasing a pet bird there are a few things that should be considered. How much space can you provide your new pet? How much bird noise can you and your neighbors tolerate? How much time will you be able to devote to your companion bird?

The key to endured happiness with your pet bird is research, before you purchase a bird. Study up on the species you are interested in. (Chances are that a large macaw, won't be suited to living in a small apartment.) Ask advice from the many knowledgeable people who are more than willing to help you find the bird that most fits your lifestyle, living space, and pocket book.

Learn all you can about the care and needs of the bird you intend to buy. You should be well informed and equipped with all that your bird needs before you bring him home. Provide ample cage space, healthy diet, lots of safe toys, proper health care, and above all lots of attention and supervised time outside the cage.

Birds have long lifespans, very often out living their owners, so the purchase of a pet bird should be well thought out.

With the proper knowledge, guidance, and commitment to proper care, you can add a great deal of pleasure and enjoyment to your life with a pet bird.
