I am the only son from four children of my parents, Sofyan Mochtar(alm) and Kustiniyati Mochtar(alm). I was born in Jakarta, September 21, 1961. I finished elementary school and high school in this metropolitan city, the capital city of my beloved country, Indonesia. My favorite food is Padang food (dendeng balado) in 'Sepakat' restaurant Blok M, and Bakmi Gajah Mada's fried rice. My sport is camping & hiking (G. Gede & Pangrango) and table tennis (ping-pong). Now I also play court tennis.

I start my undergraduate study in civil engineering (structural engineering) in University of Indonesia, Jakarta-Indonesia in August 1980. As I graduate in March 1987, I began to teach in Indonesia Institute of Technology (ITI), Serpong. I taught and conducted research in structural mechanics and reinforced concrete courses, and managed Building Materials Laboratory and Soil Mechanics Laboratory. At the same time I worked as a part timer in a construction management consultant firm. I managed construction projects, such as University of Indonesia-Depok project and many building projects in various location in Indonesia. It was very interesting experience.

In March 10, 1991 I married a beautiful girl, Ade Ismiati. We met when we were active in a youth islamic organization (Remaja Masjid Al Ikhlas-REMILA) in 1983. We have a common hobby: music. I play guitar and piano, and she sings. On December 13, 1991 our first handsome child, Adil Mochtar, was born.

In August 1992 I was lucky that I got a scholarship from OTO Bappenas to pursue a Master's degree in civil engineering (construction engineering and management) at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago-USA. My family joined me living in Chicago in June 1993. We came back to Indonesia as I graduated in May 1994.

Again, as a lecturer at ITI I taught and conducted research in civil engineering areas, such as contruction management, reinforced concrete, and soil mechanics. I managed Civil Engineering Studio and the School of Civil Engineering and Planning as an Asscociate Dean in academic matters (Pembantu Dekan I Fakultas Teknik Sipil & Perencanaan). I also worked part time in a construction management consultant firm. I managed contruction projects such as Merpati Nusantara Building-Jakarta building project, Dinas Sosial building project, Dinas Teknis DKI Jakarta building project, and Andalas University, Padang campus project. Since 1995, I also have been teaching construction management courses and advising research students in Construction Engineering and Management Graduate Program in the University of Indonesia (Program Pasca Sarjana UI), Jakarta.

My beautiful second child, Adila Amilia Mochtar was born on April 15, 1996, only about 1 year after my mother died on April 22, 1995 because of cancer desease. One half year later, on November 29, 1996 my father died. May God protect them.

Again, in August 1997, I was lucky that I got a scholarship from IIT Chicago-USA as a Teaching Assistant, so that I can pursue a Philosophy Doctoral's degree in construction engineering and management. In January 1998, my scholarship was switched from IIT to Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia government. I graduate in May 2000.

Coming back to Indonesia, now I am active not only at ITI as Vice Rector in academic affair ("Pembantu Rektor 1") since September 2000 to November 2007, but also in Graduate School UI as lecturer ("Basic of Construction Management" course) and thesis advisor, in Graduate School University of Pelita Harapan as lecturer ("Materials and Equipment Management/Procurement" course), in the industry as construction management expert consultant in a 5-story school building at Al-Ikhlas, as structural engineer of Library Building University of Khoirun (Ternate), as civil engineer in Master Plan Team of University of Khoirun at Ternate (17 hectares), State University of Jakarta, Indonesia Institute of Arts at Solo, Bangka Belitung University at Pangkal Pinang, Tirtayasa University at Serang, Tual Polytechnics South-East Maluku, as structural engineer of Faculty of Engineering University of Khoirun (Ternate), as Team Leader in Survey, Investigation, and DED of Tanjung Priok Port Pond Deepening (Pelindo II), as Team Leader of A Study of Construction Technology Industrialization in Ministry of Public Work, and as Coordinator of DED of Calang Ecocity (Aceh) Comprehensive City Planning. I am also active in other professional and social organizations such as "Yayasan Masjid Al-Ikhlas" as Vice President of "Dewan Pembina" (Advisory Board), "Asosiasi Tenaga Ahli Konstruksi Indonesia" (Indonesia Construction Experts Association) as Certification Reviewer as well as an activist in "Lembaga Pengembangan Jasa Konstruksi Nasional" (National Construction Services Development Board) such as in Competence Standard Steering Comittee, Construction Failure Steering Committee, and member of LPJK Advisory Board.

Alhamdulillah, from April 2006 I have been promoted as "Guru Besar" or "Professor" in Construction Engineering and Management (Civil Engineering) by Ministry of National Education of Indonesia. Now I have bigger responsibilities in educational fields: Teaching, Research, and Community Services. Moreover, now I have the right as a "Promotor" (Main Advisor) on Doctoral Candidate Disertation, and also I have the obligation for community enrichment. That is a big job!! Wish me luck!
