Thanks to all those who have shared their knowledge and expertise for those of us with the name (Norwood). My grandmothers/mothers maiden surname was Norwood. I have always been curious as to the origin/history and was delighted by the info.. Perhaps someone may have some info. reguarding a Catherine Norwood, who married a James Galleshaw in Sherman, Texas in 1895, in Saint James Church. Again, thanks for all your effort. May God Bless.

My Email:ihi@tiac.net
Geographical location: London
Descent from Francis: Yes, via Levi Lane [1754-1806], 7th offspring of Josiah Lane and Abigail Norwood
Other names of interest: Beck of Portsmouth NH, Coldham, Proctors of Portsmouth NH

Comments:
I am particularly interested in finding the father of Lewis Beck [1811.12.14-1875.09.07], born at Portsmouth NH, married Hannah Thompson of Manchester NH [1816-1897]. The father, whose first name is unknown, died at sea in 1811, supposedly aboard the Brig Commerce. Lewis Beck's son James H. Beck [1838-1907] married Harriet Elizabeth Proctor, daughter of Benjamin Proctor V (who, curiously, also died at sea in 1811)and Elizabeth Lane [1779-1865], daughter of Levi Lane [1754-1806], son of Josiah Lane [1721-] and Abigai Norwood [-1773]. I suspect that the Becks came from Portsmouth but, since they were Universalists, they may have had previous connections with Gloucester -- where the religion originated. As regards Fitz Hugh Lane, he was indeed a descendent of the Lane family which had tried for so long to settle in Casco Bay but, due to the Wabanaki warfare there, returned to Cape Anne. Fitz-hugh Lane (sic) is listed in The Encyclopedia Homophilica as "A erica's first major marine artist." The article also claims that a recent painting brought $3.8 million at auction -- so I guess he's been forgiven any transgressions for having been a homosexual! He's listed as "one of America's ten greatest gay artists f the 19th century," whatever that means to anybody. What is annoying me at the moment is that I know the Becks owned two shipscapes by Lane which had been bought by Proctors, what there titles were -- which I can't remember -- one calm and one stormy, an in whose attic they're hiding.
