THE NORWOOD FAMILY PAGE

Irish Norwoods

This page is intended to introduce the Norwoods with Irish heritage. The stories and data presented here will be unarranged, disorderly, and random at first, but eventually, as more information is assembled, we can begin to make some order of it. If you have Irish Norwood data to send in, please do so. Also, look at the U.S. 1850 and Ontario 1871 census data under Norwood Migration, and you will find many Norwoods who were born in Ireland.

Orientation

In the Norwoods III, by G. Marion Norwood Callam (GMNC), Chapter XXXIX is devoted to "The Irish Lines from John Norwood (427) 1601-1675, Generation XVI." To summarize, GMNC surmises that the John Norwood (1601-1675) who went to Ireland with Cromwell in 1649 and received "Belfast Towers" was the seventh child of Alexander Norwood, brother of Manasses Norwood of the Dane Court line, in the county of Kent, England. One problem with this line of descent (which may nevertheless be correct) is a four-generation gap between the John Norwood who went to Ireland and a John (Boyd) Norwood, who was born ca 1701 and had two sons: (1) John Norwood, b. c. 1727, and (2) William Norwood, b. c. 1730. Ultimately, and with greater certainty, GMNC traces the descendants of these latter two men, some of whom end up in New Zealand and Australia. The family of John Norwood seems to have resided in Belfast and that of William Norwood in Dunmanway, near Cork, where the family owned a mansion called Ballyhallwick. From the family of William Norwood a grandson William John Norwood (1817-1889) became a Baptist minister and spent some time in America after first going to Australia. He eventually returned to Australia, but one of his children, Francis Edward Norwood, was born in America on the 4th of July, 1850 ("a real live nephew of his Uncle Sam?"). Francis died in 1938 in Sydney, Australia. You can read more about this Irish Norwood line in The Norwoods III.

A message from John Brinkerhoff Moore with a link to his Norwood genealogy.

My great-great grandfather, Wm. Norwood came to America, during the Great Potato Famine, and his son John married a Shorrock. Their daughter, Nellie, married my grandfather James Irving Brinkerhoff. The chart for this part of my genealogy can be viewed at:

There is a link on this page to the autobiography of my great-grandfather, John Norwood It really is quite interesting reading as he experienced some real hard times (on the trip over in a wooden ship and after his father and mother died). He was quite industrious and made a name for himself in Paterson, NJ. He was also a personal friend of Vice President Garrett Hobart.

Sincerely,

John Brinkerhoff Moore.

Note: I have read this autobiography, and it is fascinating, a real page-turner--rcnjr.

The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site

http://www.buffalonet.org/army

This is an outstanding web site which includes the records of over 1,650 soldiers from all States and Territories who either served at, enlisted at, reenlisted at, or were discharged at the short lived Buffalo Barracks federal military post, between 1835 and 1846. Many of the men listed fought in the Florida Indian Wars, the War with Mexico, and then the Civil War.

Perhaps you have an ancestor who was at the Buffalo Barracks? Discover how tall he was; the color of his hair and eyes; his age; where he was born; and even the complexion of his skin.....and more!
