What follows is the obituary of my GGGrandfather. It appeared in the Lexington Herald of Thursday, May 30, 1912. I am typing it as written, with no corrections or other modifications.
DR. E. M. NORWOOD DIES AT HIS HOME
Was Civil War Veteran and Prominant Physician and Citizen
WAS 73 YEARS OLD
Funeral Will Be Held This Afternoon At Home On Newtown Pike
Dr. E. M. Norwood, 73 years old, a native of Massachusetts; Union Army veteran of the Civil War, and for more than forty years a prominent physician and citizen of Fayette county, died at 5:30 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home on the Newtown pike,
bout one mile from Lexington, following several years of declining health.
Dr. Norwood is survived by his wife, Mrs. Precilla Downing Norwood; three daughters, Mrs. Bruce E. King, Mrs. William Worthington and Mrs. P. P. Bradley, all of whom are wives of prominent Lexington or Fayette county business men; and two sons, Messrs.
Frank R. Norwood and Richard D. Norwood, the latter a member of the Lexington General Council, and both of whom are well known in the city and county.
The funeral services will be held at the family residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. Edwin Muller, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating, and burial will take place in the Lexington cemetery. The pall-bearers will be Messrs. John
W. Coleman, D. H. James, Coleman Gentry, J. T. Tuns, D. H. James, sell, J. H. Curry, Edward Kane and Dr. F. H. Clarke.
Born in Massachusetts.
Dr. Norwood was born May 4, 1839, at Wilmington, Middlesex county, Massachusetts. He came of old New England stock. His father was a Congregationalist preacher, and descended from the English family of that name, which for centuries was well known in
English history, one of them having been one of the Regicides. Dr. Norwood's mother was a Miss Choate and belonged to the distinguished family of that name in New England.
Dr. Norwood belonged to a large family and early started out in life to make his own way, and by his own efforts secured medical education. He was at the breaking out of the Civil War employed at the Juvenile Asylum in New York City, as an assistant t
the Superintendent and in actual charge of the boys at that institution. Himself little more than a boy, this training gave him self-control and the control and esteem of the boys he had in his charge.
At the same time he was taking medical lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the evenings, and before he had completed his medical education, at the first call for volunteers he joined the Union army as a private in a New York company;
as sent to Baltimore, and was in Washington at the time of the first battle of Bull Run, being on leave of absence for the day from his command in Baltimore. He had enlisted for ninety days, and after the expiration of his time he returned to New York, f
nished his medical course, and immediately went into the army again as an assistant surgeon, and a little later became the surgeon of a Tennessee regiment, where he served until the close of the war.
Always in Thickest of Fight.
While a non-combatant, he was always found near the front in the thickest of the fight, and on one occasion, at least, was complemented in the presence of his regiment by his Colonel for bravery in assisting in repulsng an assault made by the enemy, an
there presented with a fowlingpiece which was one of several he had recovered from the enemy in his fight.
He was an excellent surgeon during the war, and did a great deal of efficient work, but the horrors of war turned him against his chosen profession, and he never practiced medicine after he came out of the army.
During his service as a soldier his regiment was encamped near Lexington on the Georgetown pike, and there he met Miss Priscilla W. Downing, whom he married during the war. After the war was over he came to Lexington, and after remaining a short time
e went to Findlay, O., and there engaged in the milling business for a short time. He then returned to Kentucky, and had lived on his farm on the Newtown pike ever since. He engaged in general farming and was very successful.
He was probably the first man in this section to engage in the raising of strawberries and raspberries by field culture, and was very successful with them. Always himself fond of good horses, he later took up the business of keeping horses on his farm
for other persons, and this was for many years his business. He had three farms, and his methods of business and his fidelity to and trust imposed in him were such that he never lacked for patrons, and always had his farms fully stocked. This business h
continued until his health began to fail him just a few years ago, when he sold two of his farms, rented out most of the home farm, and gradually retired from business, having at his death only a few horses on his place.

Dr. Norwood was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of this city and for many years a member of its session. His faith in his Master was unwavering; he belonged to that school of splendid Christians who believe the Bible absolutely and have litt
e or no patience with the modern way of believing just so much as the individual wants to believe. In connection with no activity of his life was he more thorough-going than in his work for the church. When something had to be done, money raised, a buil
ing site selected, contracts made, Dr. Norwood took hold of it every one knew that it was going to be done, and done promptly. Of his own means he gave liberally, and he believed in others doing the same thing, and when he spoke about that or anything el
e there was never any doubt left in the minds of his auditors as to just what he meant. He will be sadly missed by his pastor, by his fellow officers and by his people.

I have made two visits to England. On both occasions we visited Leckhampton Court. I had such an awesome feeling there. It was as if a part of me belonged there. I have some great photos of Leckhampton, the Norwood(a pub), and my favorite photo is of

I am amazed at the virility at the start of the first three generations of the Norwoods. By my account, starting with Jordanus de Sheppey, at the birth of their descendant they would have been ages 78, 70 and 64. This is back when man's life expectancy wa
age 40. A Norwood in Wales has informed me that Sir Roger was born to a second wife of Sir Stephen (Mary ?) and not Fedive de Berges. Perhaps second or third wives would have accounted for the time spread.

COLONEL HENRY NORWOOD - In 1650 Colonel Henry Norwood (an Englishman) set sail from London for Jamestown. The trip was a harsh one as numerous storms were encountered throwing the ship off course and provisions became scarce. At the sight of land Colone

I am not connected (nor my web site) to the Norwood family. My neighbor Joyce Bannister (age 78) is connected to the Norwood line as follows:
Joyce was born in England and came to the US during WW11 serving in the British military. She met and married Mr. Bannister and had 9 children.
She does return to England every few years for a visit. Her sister and brother-in-law come to the US to visit and I have met them many times.
Joyce's grandfather was Edward Arthur NORWOOD (might be Arthur Edward) married to Elizabeth "Betty" ?. Lived in Margate, England.
Their daughter Florence Elizabeth married Charles Roland MOULTON and Joyce is their daughter.
Charles MOULTON parents were Fredrick MOULTON and Mary Elizabeth ?. Mary Elizabeth came from Germany to Cornwall and married Fredrick.
If any of this connects to your NORWOODS Joyce and her sister are a researchers dream. Since Joyce is going blind I have agreed to help her with research using the computer. All the ? marks can be filled in if there is a connection.
