Farmer Allied Families

Mrs. AVD Pierrepont, Professional genealogist of Petersburg, Va, is responsible for the facts and references in the sketches of the following allied families ELAM, WARD, BRANCH, CHEATHAM, WINFREE and LA FON.

The Hatchers, Wards, Elams, Farmers, Goodes, Basses, La Fons, Winfrees and Cheatham lived in Chesterfield Co for about 200 years. Their lands were near each other, often adjoining. There were many inter-marriages between these families.

ELAM - Gilbert Elam, sr was the earliest Elam ancestor found. His will is recorded in Henrico Co., Feb 1, 1693. Gilbert Elam, sr. his son Gilbert Elam, jr. and his son-in-law Edward Ward were issued a patent dated April 28, 1671 on 2015 acres on Falling Creek (Parish of Varina, Henrico Co Patents. Virginia State Land Office) Gilbert Elam. Sr's children were: Seth, Thomas, Gilbert, jr and Elizabeth. He gave his daughter Elizabeth three hundred and forty acres on Falling Creek. His daughter Elizabeth married Edward Ward. His son Thomas was the executor of his will.

WARD - Seth Ward is the earliest Ward ancestor whose record was found. His son Richard Ward married Martha Branch, daughter of THomas Branch, son of the immigrant ancestor, Christopher Branch. RIchard Ward's will, Henrico Co records 1682. Richard and Martha Branch Ward's children were: Seth, Richard and Edward, born 1665. Edward Ward married Eliabeth Elam, daughter of Gilbert Elam, Sr. Their daughter Sarah Ward married 3 Henry Farmer II.

HATCHER - Col. William Hatcher, b. about 1614, d. about 1677; was a member of the House of Burgesses at Jamestown for Henrico Co. in 1644-45-49-52 and 58. He had the following children:

  1. Benjamin Hatcher, b. 1644, m. Elizabeth, daughter of John Greenbaugh.
  2. Edward Hatcher, b. about 1633, d. 1711; m. Mary, believed to be of the Seth Ward family. In Nov 1694, he deeded property to his sons William, John, Edward and Seth.
  3. Mary Hatcher, , m. 3 Frederick Farmer
  4. A son of Col. Wm. Hatcher m. 4 Tabitha Farmer, daughter of 3 Joseph Farmer.
  5. William Hatcher and Elizabeth La Fon, m. Jan 11, 1811.
  6. Joseph La Fon, m. Paulina Hatcher Apr 29, 1827 - brother and sister married sister and brother (see LaFon Family) William and Paulina Hatcher's father was Benjamin Hatcher. Their line of descent from Col. Wm. Hatcher is not known. (Virginia State archive marriage register, pages 106 & 200)

HAWKINS

William B Hawkins was the son of Reuben Hawkins and wife Rebecca Edwards Hawkins. He was born Feb 26, 1781, d. Mar 29, 1845. He is buried at Farmdale, Franklin Co, Ky. He married Mary Crockett, daughter of Col Anthony Crockett of Franklin Co. Jan 15, 1802. Their children named in his will, recorded in Book 2, p. 157, Franklin Co., KY., were:

  5. Martha Norman Hawkins, b. Feb 18, 1811. d. Mar 23, 1890, m. J H Clark Feb 23, 1832

JETER

The name Jeter is found in Suffolk, Co., Eng., records in 1561, 1577, 1612. The work "Jeter" is a French word meaning to throw. The Jeters were French Huguenots who took refuge in England and lived there many years before coming to America.

According to a memorandum left by William Oscar Jeter of Kentucky, John Jeter came from England in the early 1700's and settled near Port Royal, Caroline Co., Va. He was twice married and had eleven children by each marriage. His wives' names are not known. John Jeter's children:

  1. George Jeter, moved to Orange, Co., Va.
  2. Henry Jeter, lived in Caroline Co., Va.
  3. Thomas Jeter, moved to Amelia Co., Va., about 1760 and died there 1765
  4. William Jeter, moved to SC and died there about 1797
  5. Ambrose Jeter, moved to Amelia Co., Va.

Other children of John Jeter moved to Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and NC.

Thomas Jeter of Amelia Co., Va., d . 1765 He married Winifred ------- 1740

Their son Henry Jeter, b. 1744, was the administrator of his fathers will. Henry Jeter m. Elizabeth Bell of Bedford Co., Va

Their son Pleasant Jeter m. Jane Hatcher Dec 15, 1800. Their children: Dr. Jeremiah Bell Jeter (b. 1802, d. 1880) and eminent Baptist minister of Richmond, Va., and St Louis, Mo.

Andrew Jeter, MD Four daughters, Margaret, Edith, Betty and Sarah. They all lived in Missouri. Dr. Andrew Jeter was a surgeon in the Confederate Army, and at one time was a professor of Medicine, U of Missouri. Dr. Andrew Jeter lived a Palmyra, Mo. His children were:

  1. Dudlay B Jeter of La Grange, Mo
  2. Jane Jeter of La Grange, Mo
  3. Florence Jeter, b. 1853, d. 1915. She married 8 Lucien Farmer. Their children are listed under the Farmer family.

There is a town in Amelia Co., Va., named Jetersville. A prominent member of the family was Gov. Thomas B Jeter of SC (1827-1883.) Authority for Jeter genealogy "Our Kin" by Akerly & Parker and William and Mary Quarterly, Series 2:12, in St Louis Public Library.

FREEMAN

George D Freeman (1763 - 1831) m. Keziah Yancey in Culpeper Co., Va. 1781. They moved to Woodford Co., Ky. in 1800. Later moved to Anderson Co., Ky. Their children:

  6. Thomas Major Freeman, m. Sarah Bell Pattee Their children: Mary Lucy Freeman, m. Dr Chambers Sarah Freeman, m. 8 Oscar Farmer, of Louisville, Ky. Their children are listed under the Farmer family.

CLAGGETT -- allied to Prather family, the ancestor line of Elizabeth Claggett Prather.

The Claggett family sprang from Norman stock, the progenitor having landed in England with William the Conqueror in 1067 and participated in the Battle of Hastings. Claggett of Houghton, Co Cambridge, England, assumed in 1104 the Coat of Arms since born by the family.

Robert Claggett, b. 1490 at Walling, Kent CO., Eng. The name of wife unknown.

His son RIchard Claggett b. 1525, m. ----- Gouder, daughter of Sir Robert Gouder.

His son George Claggett, b. 1570 was Mayor of Canterbury three times 1609, 1622, and 1632. Name of wife unknown.

His son Col. Edward Claggett b. 1605-7, m. Margaret Adams, daughter of Sir Thomas Adams, Mayor of London. (See Adams family) Sir Edward Claggett was an ardent loyalist, he held a commission in the army of Charles I, was imprisoned in the Tower of London by the Puritans.

His son Col. Thomas Claggett,Sr. m. in England before 1635, emigrated to Maryland 1670; d. Calvert Co Md. 1703. Lord of Godlington Manor, Kent Co., England. He m. Mrs Mary Winter Hooper, widow of Richard Hooper, Calvert Co., Md.

His son Capt Thomas Claggett, jr, m. Mary Keene. She d 1759. He was b. 1678, d 1732. He lived at Prince George Co., Md.

Their daughter Elizabeth Claggett d. before 1767, m. 1727, Col Thomas Prather, jr. b. 1703, d. 1785., who was the son of Col Thomas Prather, sr. and Martha Sprigg Prather. For further genealogy see the Sprigg line.

SPRIGG --ancestor line to Martha Sprigg Prather (Proof Lillard Genealogy)

Lt. Thomas Sprigg was born 1630 in Kethering, Northamptonshire, England. He came first to the Colony of Virginia and lived in Northamptonshire Co. It was there that he signed the Submission to Parliament in 1651. From Virginia he moved to Maryland and lived in or near Resurrection Manor in Calvert Co., which afterwards became Prince George Co.

His first wife, Catherine, was sister of Gov. Stone of Maryland. (Annapolis Lib. Vol 1., p. 89) She died without issue.

He received a grant of 1000 acres from Lord Baltimore which he called Northampton in Prince George Co. The old Manor House was burned in 1909. The land is still owned by direct descendants.

He was one of the justices of Calvert Co., Md. and of the Quoram, in 1658-61-67-69-70-74. (Arch III, p. 424, Vol 14) In 1661, he was presiding Justice of the Co.; High Sheriff of Calvert Co. 1664.

In 1668, he m. Elinor Mithall. He d. in 1704, at Northampton Manor. His will dated 1704, proved Dec 104, mentions Martha Sprigg Prather as one of his heirs and his son-in-law Thomas Prather as one of the executors of his will (Md. Hist. Mag., Mar 1913, Vol III, also Sprigg Genealogy, in Stockett Genealogy, p. 4 to 15).

ADAMS -- allied to Claggett and Prather families (Proof Library of Congress no. C-S 410-443)

Thomas Adams, Baronet, of Wemme, m. Margaret Erpe, daughter of Sir John Erpe of Shrewsbury, England. His son Sir Thomas Adams, was b. at Wemme, 1586. He m. Ann Mapted, daughter of Humphrey Mapted, of Trenton, Essex Co., England. He was Sheriff of London 1639-40. He was on the first Committee of Aldermen. He was sent to the Hague to compliment His Majesty King Charles II, by whom he was Knighted. He was Lord Mayor of Lond 1645-46, afterward moved to Sprouston, Norfolk. He was created Baronet June 12, 1660, d. Feb 24, 1667. Will probated Apr 9, 1668.

His daughter Margaret Adams m. Col Edward Claggett of London b. 1607.

Their son Col. Thomas Claggett, Sr., b. in England 1635, m. Mrs Mary Mutter Hooper, widow of Richard Hooper. He came to Maryland in 1670, d. 1703 in Calvert Co., Md. Will in Annapolis Library, Book 3, pg. 8.

Their son, Thomas Claggett, m. Mary Keene.

ROWLAND

The Rowlands are of Welsh origin. The date of their immigration to America and the name of the immigrant ancestor are not available. The following Rowland genealogy is accurate:

Their son, David Pitman Rowland b. June 27, 1857 in Madison Co., (??) m. Lizzie Amelia Lee Apr 12, 1882. Lizzie Amelia Lee's father, George Fraancis Lee, was a cousin of Gen. Robert E Lee.

Their daughter Susan Lee Rowland m. 9 Cecil T Farmer Oct 3, 1906.
