THE JUNCTION SCHOOLHOUSE LIBRARY
In the summer of 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Bert M. Alford purchased
the Junction school property from Mrs. Alfor&s uncle and aunt,
Mr. and Mrs. Albert M. Everett. Mrs. Alford was born in Mar-
ble Falls. Texas. the daughter of James Kay Smith and Hettie
(Everett) Smith. Her paternal grand parents were Jim and
Sally Smith, former ranchers from the Llano - Oxford area.
Her Uncle John and Aunt Sally Smith owned ranch land and a
home near the Sandy Store. Her maternal grandparents were
Louis Larkin and Pamelia Jane Everett. early settlers near
Albert. It was the parents of her Aunt Clara Meier Everett
who owned the ranch and built the original rock house which.
with many additions, is now the IJBJ Ranch Home. Mrs. Alfords
parents live in the Johnson City area, and Mrs. Alford (Bertha
Pamelia) attended her first school at the Rocky Creek School¾
Bert Alford was born in Ft. Worth. In 1939 he was clerk of
the Appropriations Committee of the Texas House of Representa-
tives and worked for the State Comptroller after the Legisla-
ture adjourned. He served in World War II. After the Army
service Mr. and Mrs. Alford established the A & A Accounting
Office in Lawton, Oklahoma.

The idea of a permanent library began while Mrs. Alford, Mrs.
Jordan, Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Cravens were exchanging books or
flower gardening, native trees, driftwood and poetry. Mrs.
Welgehausen and Mrs. Jacoby began gathering books to begin a
one day a week service. Thus the Junction Schoolhouse Library
began.
