The "Presbyterian Encyclopedia" provides the following informationfrom Ebenezer Hazard, Esq., of Philadelphia, who had been a pupil ofDr. Finley:
"He was remarkable for sweetness of temper and politeness of behaviorHe was given to hospitality, charitable without ostentation, exemplary in the discharge of all relative duties, and in all duties, and in all things showing himself a pattern of good works. As a divinehe was a Calvinist in sentiment. His sermons were not hastyproductions, but filled with good sense and well digested sentiment, expressed in language pleasing to men of science, yet perfectlyintelligible to the illiterate. They were calculated to inform theignorant, to alarm the careless and secure, and to edify and comfortthe fatithful."

Adopted By Arthur Nevin in 1909. It is believed that he is the actualson of Arthur Finley Nevin. The story has been that Arthur Nevin andMary Lynham had an affair. They were caught and caused Mary's firsthusband, Davis Dean, to run away. It is believed that after a numberof years, Mary was able to divorce Davis (no one apparently found himfor about 20 years) and Mary was then free to marry Arthur Nevin andhave Arthur adopt both sons, of which Thomas was his. This wasconfirmed by Thomas' wife, Gertrude Cox, who told her daughter, Ann,before passing away, that he was Arthur's son.
Thomas, known as Jack, knew Ernest Hemingway from the First World War.They both served in the French Army. Jack is mentioned as the kid fromPittsburgh in Hemingway's book, "Farewell to Arms."
