The following is from Grace Marmaduke's "The Marmaduke and Some AlliedFamilies": Governor Meredith Miles Marmaduke: "Dr. L. G. Tyler, in theEnclyclopedia of Virginia Biography, says of him:

(War of 1812) 'Afterwardshe was appointed District Marshal for the Eastern District Court. Heserved for several years as United States Marshal, and was appointedClerk of the Circuit Court.'
Attracted by the expansion westward, Meredith Miles Marmaduke moved toMissouri in 1821, locating at New Franklin in Howard County.Interesting records are found in Warsaw, Virginia, in the clerk'soffice: Deed Book 21, p. 421, under date, June 13, 1819, says thatSmauel Purcell sells to M. After becoming a pioneer to Missouri, he was engaged for six years inthe overland trade with New Mexico; helping to blaze that trailwestward for the expansion of our Nation. He kept a diary." (Thisdiary is included in the above mentioned article.)
Her article later cites an excerpt from the National Enclyclopedia ofAmerican Biography, Vol. XII, pp. 303, 308, furnished by Dr. Tyler:

"Colonel Marmaduke made his home near Arrow Rock Missouri. Her, theprominent Dr. John Sappington (formerly of Maryland) had a tavern, andseveral attractive daughters. The explorers, Kit Carson, Lewis andClark, Governor Claiborne Jackson and M. M. Marmaduke, were guests inthis house. January 24, 1826, Colonel Marmaduke married LaviniaSappington, a daughter of the doctor. Governor Jackson, in turn, mariied three of the daughters. . . The old tavern is now protected asa D. A. From the Missouri State Historical Society:
"The uniting of the families of Marmaduke and Sappington exercised acontrolling infulence over the politics of their county, and thememory of this fact has been perpetuated in a pointing by GeneralBingham entitled "The General Election." - it portrays the principalparies - and Meredith Miles Marmaduke can be easily recognized aspresiding Judge."
