(MOSTLY) ONLINE GAMES TO PLAY

Adventure. You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and down a gully...
This is an internet version of the text-based Adventure game all us computer professionals played back in the 70s. Don't look for terrific graphics here - you have to use your wits to make your way out of the caves once you've found them.
Some programmers are apparently frustrated by the lack of graphics and are trying to put up interactive versions that include some pictures and navigation buttons. Another roadside attraction -- Colossal Cave has some useful information along with its pictures. Colossal Cave Adventure is an article about the origins and culture of Adventure.

Lycos Cybersurfari. A fun internet treasure hunt -- search the internet for clues and win prizes. (Our family recently won $500!!) Cybersurfari now takes off three times a year -- in March, June, and October.

Puzzlemaker. Create puzzles and games for newsletters, flyers, handouts, or classroom assignments. This site also has mazes, word searches, criss-cross puzzles, number blocks, cryptograms, and more.

Online Games. Links to online games; organized by category -- Browser, Java, Shockwave.

GAMES YOU CAN BUY TO PLAY

Mayfair Games. This company has many high-quality board and card games, including The Settlers of Catan.

Kadon Enterprises. High quality games and puzzles; colorful and original. We've bought Kadon games and puzzles for years at local crafts shows. Now they are also online.

Klutz Press. Obviously this is a place to buy their books, but there is also some "cool stuff" to do. Plus you can buy extras of those things that come attached to their books should yours become lost or chewed by the dog.

OTHER NEAT STUFF TO DO ONLINE

Internet Pizza Server. When you just can't pay for the real thing. Send a pizza (gif or jpeg) to your own e-mail address. An interesting variety of toppings available.

Mystery Net. Several mystery stories as well as mysteries to solve each week. Some can be delivered to you via e-mail. Contests.

Fractint. Freeware version of a fractal generation program. A screen saver is also available. Cool stuff.

Groundhog Day. A truly non-sectarian holiday.

Easter Egg Archive. Easter Eggs are a hidden feature or novelty that programmers have put into the software they develop. Some very strange and interesting stuff here.

Press Any Key. Ever wonder what happens when you press the ANY key? This site has all kinds of silly stuff -- the meaning of your name, how to annoy people, strange quizzes from Densa.

Hexagon Maze. Notes about mazes; some mazes to print and solve; links to other maze sites.

Sodaplay. This one is a little hard to describe. You can put things together using masses, springs, and muscles.... but that doesn't tell you much. Your creations can move around. Or you can just look through other people's creations and the SodaZoo.

GAMES AND OTHER THINGS (MAINLY) FOR KIDS

Fun Brain Learning Network. Math Baseball, word detective, mathing games, map games, grammar games, change maker, spelling games, and more. There's even a Game Finder to help you find what you're looking for today.

Fun Stuff. And there is lots of fun stuff here -- Fake Out (guess the definition or make up your own), word searches to print out, Geonet geography game, book discussions and related games, Wacky Web Tales, which are like mad-libs. Some games are submitted by kids.

The Case.Com for Kids From MysteryNet -- Quicksolve puzzles, mini-mysteries, stories to solve, scary stories, magic tricks, and contests.

Kid Crosswords and Other Puzzles Puzzles on a wide variety of topics -- mostly to print out and solve. Includes a puzzle generator and links to some related sites.

Thinks.com -- Brain games, puzzles and pastimes, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, word searches, codes, contests. Mostly games for families and young children. Lots of Java scripts; may be slow to load.

Weird Richard's Lego Pages. If you like building with Legos, this site is definitely worth checking out. Besides models and ideas for building, there are lesson plans and activities.

Chess Kids Academy. Free online lessons and quizzes -- or you can play chess against the computer.

Brown Box Toys. Cardboard playhouses -- terrific shapes, can be decorated to suit new owner. Pretty d**m cheap -- about $20 plus S&H.
