Australia is one of the most urbanised nations on earth, with most people living in a handful of coastal cities, particularly in the SE. At June 1990, 71.2% of all the Australian population (approx 18,000,000) lived in the combined state and territory capitals and 6 other major cities. However the continent as a whole has a very low population density of just 2 person per sq. kilometre.

After many years of living off the land Australia's economy has found a new direction, with the tourism industry now the nation's largest export earner. Visitors to Australia continue to be attracted by Sydney's Opera House & Harbour Bridge, Great Barrier Reef, Gold Coast, Cairns & the Outback, where you will find Uluru in the Northern Territory.

Most of the many thousands of animal & bird species found in Australia do not occur naturally elsewhere. Some of these native creatures have evolved adaptions that are highly unusual, but others have developed along lines remarkably similar to unrelated species in other parts of the world. Some of these rare species include the monotremes (ancient animals of obscure ancestry). These animals lay eggs and incubate them in a pouch. An example of these include the platypus and a family of echidnas. Below are some pictures and links of our most well know species if you would like to know more about them, click on the pics.
