travelling miles and miles

matter the years that pass

enchantment and wonder

CAROUSEL TERMS:
BRASS RING:
on today's Carousel
they have mostly disappeared
but
on the older Carousels it was said that you could win a
free
ride if you could 'grab the brass ring'.
JUMPERS:
the horses/ponies
that move up and down are usually
called
the 'Jumpers'. They usually have all four hooves off of
the
ground.
STANDERS:
these horses/ponies
will usually have at least 3
feet
on the ground.
LEAD HORSE
('KING'): These
are usually the most decorative
horses/ponies
on the ride. They are usually the outside row
horses
and are usually directly behind the chariots.
ROMANCE SIDE:
This is the
side of the horses/ponies that face
the
outside. They are usually the most decorative.
CAROUSELS
have only horses/ponies.
A 'Menagerie Carousel' or
'Merry
Go Round' can be many different animals.
CAROUSEL TIDBITS:
The
Carousel originated in France several 100 years ago as a device
to
help young noblemen practice their lancing skills. As the wooden
horse
rotated around a center pole, the rider would try to spear a
brass
ring.
The
Legend of the Carousel is that horsemen would throw scented
c;ay
balls from rider to rider in a test of skill. Those that were
untouched
by the clay's scent were said to be 'superior' riders.
The
sport was brought to Italy and renamed 'carrosello' meaning
'little
wars'.
One
hundred years ago a German immigrant named Gustav
DENTZEL
who operated the G.A. Dentzel Steam and
Horsepower
Carousel Company, created a device that
allowed
the ornate carved animals to rise and fall.
