Welcome to my Zebra Finch page!!

Basics

My zebra finches were my first birds. They are so cute, the perfect birds for just about anyone. They are pretty quiet, they don’t screach or scream like bigger birds. They aren’t in need in human companionship. Just stick a bunch of them in a cage together and give them food and water and they’ll be happy. Another great thing about zebra finches is that they are so easy to tell the girls from the boys. The boys have red beaks and bright cheek patches, while the girls have orange beaks and lighter, smaller cheek patches or no cheek patches at all. They also come in a wide variety of colors, well a wide variety of whites and browns. These birds live about five years, so you aren’t going to get a life time companionship out of them. The only problem with these birds is that they can be mean. If you put them in a cage with other types of birds they can be really mean. They will destroy other nests and peck other birds. But, the answer is to just to put them with only other Zebra’s. These birds are NOT meant to live alone. To leave a finch by itself would be MEAN!

Breeding

Zebra finches are relatively easy to breed. You need to give them a nest of some sort, you can buy one at a feed store or make your own. The green strawberry baskets will work! If you are breeding in a cage with more then one pair then you need to provide extra nests. For every two pairs of birds you need to put up at least three nests. Once the birds makea nest and lay their eggs they will need to incubate for about thirteen days. Then the babies will start to hatch. You need to provide the partents with proper food for the babies. Most bird books will give you a varitety of recipes to use. The babies will be ready to leave the nest in another eighteen days. I think that it is best to leave the nest alone as much as possible after the babies hatch. So, there you have it.
