Locality

This family originated in the Barby (Northamptonshire) and  Cubbington - Radford Semele - Marton - Leamington Hastings (Warwickshire) area of England about 1750. Some descendant lines are known in England and in Australia (New South Wales) to the present.
Note that there are many phonetic variations for "Batcheldor".

Early Generations

1   John Batcheldour m. Sarah Garlick

It appears that the earliest known progenitors of this line were John Batcheldour and his wife Sarah Garlick, likely parents of:

1.1     Richard Batcheldor (1739…) m. Mary —

Richard Batcheldor, baptized in 1739 and likely the son of JOHN BATCHELDOUR and his wife SARAH GARLICK, was by his wife Mary — apparently the father of:

Note: Richard Batchelder (perhaps a brother of William above) and Sarah Haycock married in Barby in 1781 and had five children: Jonathon (born Barby 1781), Sarah, Ann, George and Richard.
Jonathan Batchelder and his wife Ann had six children: Sarah (born 1783), Ann (born 1787), George (born 1790), Richard (born 1796), Ann (born 1806) and Elizabeth Batchelder (born Barby, Northants, 1808, great x4 grandmother of Sean O'Reilly of Victoria, Australia [nov2000].
Elizabeth Batchelder of Barby married William Chater in Long Buckby about 1832; she is a forebear of Steve Brown of Blackburn, Melbourne, Australia [2000].

1.1.1   William Batcheldor (1766…) m. Mary Masters (1767…)

Things become more definite in this the third generation of the Batcheldor lineage.

William Batcheldor was an agricultural labourer at Radford Semele in Warwickshire. He is considered to have been born at Barby in Northamptonshire to RICHARD BATCHELDOR and his wife MARY, and baptised at Barby in 1766. [Note: Radford may have been a district 1.5km north-northwest of Coventry rather than the parish of Radford Semele.]

William married Mary Masters in 1789 at Marton Warwickshire. Children to William and Mary Batchelor were:

Possibly another child of William and Mary Batchelor was Mary Ann Batcheldor, to whom at least two children were baptised at Radford Semele in the early 1830s:

1.1.1.1    William Batcheldor m. Elizabeth Ebell

William Bacheldor married Elizabeth Ebell at Radford Semele in 1819, producing:

1.1.1.2    Edward Batcheldor m. Anne Goode

An Edward Batcheldor married Anne Goode at nearby Offchurch on 1825 their union producing:

It is possible that Edward and Ann then moved to Leamington, where records have:

Of this latter group, Edward was deceased by April 1851, and Ann was operating a grocery shop in Leamington. The 31 March 1851 census has:

1.1.1.3     Joseph Batcheldor (1799…1860) m. Elizabeth Boyes (1804…1838)

Joseph Batcheldor, born circa 1799 at Radford Semele in Warwickshire, was the fifth known child of literate agricultural labourer WILLIAM BATCHELOR and his wife MARY MASTERS. Joseph Batchieldor was baptised on 1 December 1799 at Radford Semele, about 2km east of Warwick.

Labourer Joseph Batchelor (of the parish of Lillington) married Elizabeth Boys on 18 February 1821 in her parish, Leamington Priors. Elizabeth, the illegitimate daughter of MARY BOYS, had been baptised 23 September 1804 [Wakesunday] at Cubbington. Elizabeth bore Joseph nine known children:

The family is recorded in the 1841 and 1851 Census Returns for Cubbington, though there is no trace of it there in the 1861 Returns. The 1851 census for the village of Cubbington has the following:

William (born 1822) spent the last 31 years of his life as Station Master at Narborough, 12km southwest of Leicester, dying in 1893. Catherine died in 1887.

1.1.1.3.1.1 Joseph Boyes Batcheldor (1852…1904) m. Fanny Brice (1851…1916)

Joseph Boyes Batcheldor, born 1852 and baptised at Cubbington on 30 May 1852, was the eldest of five children of WILLIAM BATCHELDOR and his wife KATHERINE GILCHRIST. Joseph married Fanny Brice in 1875; amongst their children was:

1.1.1.3.1.1.1 William Henry Batcheldor (1876…1934) m. Mary Louise Gardiner (1877…1963)

William Henry Batcheldor, born 1876, was the eldest child of JOSEPH BOYES BATCHELDOR and his wife FANNY BRICE. William married Mary Louise Gardiner; amongst their four children were:

1.1.1.3.1.1.1.1 Beatrix Minnie Batcheldor (1907…) m1. Charles Halfhide, m2. ??

Beatrix Minnie Batcheldor, born 1907, was the third of four children of WILLIAM HENRY BATCHELDOR and his wife MARY LOUISE GARDINER. Beatrix married twice, initially to Charles Halfhide to whom she bore one child:

There was no issue to Beatrix's second marriage.

1.1.1.3.1.2 William Batcheldor (1862…1944) m1. Minnie Axton, m2. Hilda Ellen Hodgins

William Batcheldor, born in 1862 at Polesworth WAR, was perhaps the youngest of five children of WILLIAM BATCHELDOR and his wife KATHERINE GILCHRIST. William married twice, his first wife being Minnie Axton, who bore him two sons:
Like his father, William (born 1862) also joined the Railway as an apprentice. Marrying into money, he left the Railways and "inherited" a flourishing shop in Watford from his in-laws. When his wife died (according to his son William, from over-work), this William was able to retire on the proceeds from the disposal of the business, with most of the money going to the family of his second marriage after his death.

William's second marriage was to Hilda Ellen Hodgins, who bore him six children.

1.1.1.3.1.2.1 Frederick Batcheldor (1891…1968) m. Elizabeth Colston (1890…1991)

Frederick Batcheldor, born 1891, was the elder of two children of WILLIAM BATCHELDOR and his wife MINNIE AXTON. Frederick married Elizabeth Colston, and they had two children:
Elizabeth Bacheldor née Colston died in January 1991, age 100 years. Her daughter was still alive in 1998.

1.1.1.3.1.2.2 William Batcheldor (1894…1967) m. Elsie Turner (1894…1972)

William Batcheldor, born 1894, was the second of two children of WILLIAM BATCHELDOR and his wife MINNIE AXTON. William, a banker, married Elsie Turner in 1921, and they raised three children:

1.1.1.3.1.2.2.1 Arthur Gordon "Jim" Batcheldor (1922…) m. Ruby Violet Sharp (1925…)

Arthur Gordon Batchelor, born 1922 and since childhood known as Jim, was the eldest of three children of WILLIAM BATCHELDOR and his wife ELSIE TURNER. Jim married Ruby Violet Sharp in 1947, and they raised three children:

Jim contributed much to the English details of this volume.

1.1.1.3.2    James Batcheldor (1824…1881) m. Anne Maria Newcome née Newth (c1823…1885)

James Batcheldor (baptised James Batcheler in December 1824, Cubbington), third child and second son of JOSEPH BATCHELOR and ELIZABETH BOYS, was a 32 years old bachelor timber dealer residing at Northend when he married 33 years old widow Ann(e) Maria Newcombe née Newth (Maria) on 24 May 1857 in Southam Warwickshire. Ann, also a resident of Northend in 1857, was the daughter of farmer CHARLES NEWTH and his wife GRACE PRIDE.

[Keith Lindbeck wrote (March 2003) that Charles Newth was the of ABSOLOM NEWTH and MARY SMITH, who had married on 8 September 1785 at Horsley, Gloucestershire. Grace Pride, born 29 July 1791, was the daughter of WILLIAM PRIDE (born circa 1756) and SARAH VINER (born circa 1760). Charles Newth and Grace Pride married at Horsley on 30 March 1815, with nine issue: Adeliza Jane Newth (married Henry Chew), Alfred Bethel Newth, Charles Frederick Newth, George Charles Newth, Mary Hannah Newth, Phoebe Grace Newth, Sarah Viner Newth (married Levi Randle at Eastcombe Baptist Church on 24 February 1845 with six issue including Charles William Randel/Randall), William Pride Newth and Ann Maria Newth (married James Batcheldor). Roslyn Fornaro of Western Australia (pers comm 24 January 2004) can provide a family tree for Grace Pride.]

James Batcheldor had not been noted resident at his father’s house in Cubbington by the enumerators of the 1851 census; it is possible that at that James was at that time (31 March 1851) working as a toll collector on the Coventry road at Aston.

Keith Lindbeck (March 2003) located a letter from Charles Newth to his children in Australia (one of whom was Anne Maria Batcheldor, formerly Newcombe, née Neath, wife of James Batcheldor). The letter was among some papers passed on to Keith by way of his sister-in-law from his mother, who had received them from her aunt E.E.Cunynghame at the latter's death; the entire small case of papers all had some connection with the past of the Cunynghame and/or Batcheldor families:
24th November 1859
Dear Children,
I am happy to say that at last I have received your note; I have had several sent to you for I was so uneasy by hearing of so many letters coming from Australia every month. I now hope you will let me hear from you every 3 months - I left Gaston grey at Michaelmas and did not hear of another farm, I had a sale and I am now living at next house to where Mr. Winterbottom did, by whirley my cough and my breath, gets worse. I shall soon change worlds but it is the Lord, He knows how, and when, and will do what is best for one I am sure. Your mother still gets worse. She is put into bed about 8 or 9 o'clock and do not move hand or foot till she is taken out of bed next morning.
I hope you write as soon as you can and tell me how, and in what way to send you your share of money at my death. There will be your share of the books from the Library if you think they are worth carriage say so. It will be about 20, if not I shall part them between the other 8 children. Mrs William, Mrs Alfred, Mrs Charles, Mrs Chew and I suppose all the other Mrs are in a very interesting way
Pinkney
December 28th 1859
Dear Sister and Brother
Father begun to write this letter but got worse and sent it to me to finish it. I went to see him on Friday the 16th of December and found him so much worse, that I did not start your letter.

Father got W Newman to direct this.

Those named in the 1859 Horsley will of Charles Newth [on http://www.f1.clara.net/wills_indentures.htm, per janehodson@f1.clara.co.uk] included Grace Newth (wife), George Charles Newth (son), William Pride Newth (son), Charles Frederick Newth (son), Alfred Bethel Newth (son), Henry Chew, Thomas Pride (friend), Adeliza Jane Chew (daughter), Anna Maria Banhelsor / Newcomb (daughter), Sarah Viner Randle (daughter), Phoebe Grace Pritchard (daughter), Mary Hannah Newth (daughter) and witnesses Mr Smith (Solicitor, Nailsworth) and G B Smith (Solicitor, Nailsworth).

Keith Lindbeck (2 April 2003) forwarded two un-dated letters addressed to "Dear Aunt"; one was signed by Charles William Randall, while the other was from "Charlie's sister"; the will named Sarah Randle as a sister of Ann Maria. Sarah Newth and Levi Randle married on 24 February 1845 at Eastcombe (Sarah's father listed as Charles Newth - Farmer).

My dear Aunt,
I have had an idea a long time I would like to come out to New South Wales, and I have finaly (sic) made up my mind to do the same, but what I write for is to know your opinion of it, and also for information as to what is necessary to do when I land or if you could make it convenient without much trouble at your home for a short time that I may get work.
Please write me per return of post, and you will greatly oblige.
Your aff. Nephew
Charles William Randall
P.S. I am fifth son of your sister Sarah, am 22 years of age.

Prospect Villa, Nailsworth
Dear Aunt,
It is now a long time since I have written to you. I shall not be able to do much to it now as I have a néedle broken in my right thumb these last 3 weeks and cannot get it out - but my brother Charlie thinks of coming out to Australia in the early spring. He will have letters to 2 houses of business in Melbourne but thinks he would much rather come to you first and see if there was an opening near you first. He will not want any help as he will have enough to bring him out and to keep him till he can get something to do. He is very quiet and you will have no néed to be ashamed of him. He as (sic) been working for us for 2 years. My husband is doing the umbrella stick trade. Charlie has been doing the carving. He is very clever at it. We are very sorry to loose him, but he thinks the work too close for him. He has not been so well latly [sic]. I think you will find him very much like what Father was at his age. So dear Aunt if you will be kind to him for dear Mother's sake you cannot think what a relief it will be to us all.
Dear Aunt I should like a letter from you very much and to know how you are. We have lost one brother since Mother. It was Godfrey. He was about 3 when you went out. I shall not pretend to tell you all the news - leave that for Charlie as I cannot get rid of baby the while I write. He is 15 months and a bright boy. I have 6 of them. Twin girls will be 4 years Saturday so you see I have enough to do. We here [sic] the mill next below Uncle Charles at Townend Gushy just set up in business in Nailsworth in the cabinet line. He was the baby when you left. Uncle and Aunt Hook are both dead this summer. My boy will not let me write any more. I do not know if you can read this but if I leave it till to morrow it may be no better so dear Aunt if you will let us know what you think of Charleys coming out I shall be very glad we have

By her previous marriage, Ann(e) was the mother of:
From her 1857 wedding, it can be implied that Ann(e) Maria Newcombe was born between May 1823 and May 1824. It is possible that Ann(e) Maria Newcombe was listed in the 1851 census as the 28 year old (born Horsley, Gloustershire) wife of Northend-born shoemaker Robert Newcombe (27), who resided at North End, Northend, with their daughter Ann (aged 7, born at Northend).

The Batcheldore family, James (34), Anna M [Maria] (34) and Anna's' daughters Anna M (7) and Emily G (4), emigrated to Australia arriving in Melbourne with then un-named new-born daughter Clara (born en-route) in May 1858 aboard the Scottish Chief, sixteen months prior to James' younger brother John who with his family came arrived in Sydney aboard the Abyssinian in September 1859. The Scottish Chief had departed Liverpool ENG on 7 February 1858, reaching Melbourne VIC on 7 May 1858. [James had assisted John's emigration, paying a deposit in 1859 for each of John, his wife Jane and their children Joseph and William]. Her immigration details imply that James' wife Anna was born about 1824. [
Note: perhaps daughter Ann's age in the census CD transcription mentioned above was a transcription error of "1", or perhaps she died about 1851 and another daughter born about then was given the name.]

James and Maria had four other known children:
James’ 1881 death certificate stated James was the father of six children: Clara, Rosa, James, George and two (un-named) males who pre-deceased James, to date no corroborative evidence has been found for the two males pre-deceasing James.

James and Maria settled at Fish River Creek near Bathurst. Publican and storekeeper, James died at Oberon on 19 March 1881; Maria died at Oberon on 12 October 1885.

Violet, born in 1896 at Nyngan NSW, was the daughter of son of Edith school-teacher JOHN CALLAGHAN and his wife ANNIE ELIZA MAY PEARCE ("May"). John had come to the Edith school from Dunéedo NSW, apparently to re-establish some control over some fairly unruly lads in the school. Ernest and Violet raised three children:

Ernest was a farmer and grazier, operating "Spring Hill" at Edith. He was tall and very handsome, with a great sense of humour. He was a keen sportsman, loving cricket, tennis and horse-races.

Violet Elizabeth Josephine Batcheldor née Callaghan died in January 1942. Ernest Oswald Batcheldor died 15 February 1969.

1.1.1.3.4.1.11.1 Oswald John Batcheldor (1920…) m. Grace Mary Whittaker (1928…)

Oswald John Batcheldor ("Ossie"), son of ERNEST OSWALD BATCHELDOR and his wife VIOLET ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE CALLAGHAN, was born on 1920; on 6 April 1944 at Oberon he married Grace Mary Whittaker, born 1928. Grace, born and baptised at Foley's Creek near Oberon, was the daughter of LEONARD WITTAKER (farmer of Oberon, born circa 1885 at "Essington" between Oberon and Rockley, died 1968) and ELIZABETH GIBBONS (born 1898, died 1969, Oberon).
Ossie lived at Edith and Jenolan Caves before moving to Penrith and Emu Plains. He worked as a security guard. He and Grace had two children:

1.1.1.3.4.1.11.2 Thelma Violet May Batcheldor (1922…) m. Richard Percival Young (1917…2003)

Thelma Violet May Batcheldor, daughter of ERNEST OSWALD BATCHELDOR and his wife VIOLET ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE CALLAGHAN, born 1922 at Oberon, married Richard Percival Young ("Dick") on 12 June 1948 at Lithgow NSW. Dick, born at Lithgow in 1917, was one of six children of VINCENT HENRY YOUNG (born 23 August 1895(?), Stanthorpe QLD) and MAY CATHERINE WILLIAMS (Mae) (born 3 November 1890(?) at Emmaville QLD). Mae, who had lived at Tildsley and Lithgow, was remembered as a soft, docile and lovable lady and great giver; she died at Lithgow on 3 November 1969. Vincent, a coal miner at Lithgow, regarded as a fine and highly moral fellow, died at Lithgow in July 1978. Thelma and Dick had two children:

Thelma and Dick lived and farmed at Edith and later also at "Grand View" Oberon, winning Farmer of the Year several times, with two trips to New Zealand as a result. Their primary lambs constantly won prizes at the Oberon and Bathurst Shows. Dick, a kind, honest well-regarded man and hard worker, had enjoyed and excelled at cycling. Thelma, a hard worker and great sportswoman, showed strong determination and kindness. She was Oberon's district champion pea-picker several times. A fortnight before his fiftieth wedding anniversary Dick was in hospital with a lung infection and some cardiac problems. Dick Young died on 21 November 2003. The Western Advocate published this obituary in 2004:

Edith community loses honourable, loving friend
THE death has occurred of well-known Edith lamb producer Richard Percival (Dick) Young.
The late Mr Young passed away peacefully with his loved ones around him in Bathurst hospital on November 21.
He would have been 87 on February 9.
Dick Young, who was born in 1917, was the second son of Vincent Henry and Catherine (May) Young and was born in Lithgow.
His older brother, Ted, owned and worked the Caltex garage in Cullen Bullen for many years.
Mr Young's other brothers were Charlie (deceased), from Wollongong, and Vinnie and Eric, who have both lived their lives in Lithgow.
His sister, Doris, now lives at Daley's Point on the Central Coast.
From an early age the elder two boys worked in the coal mines at Lithgow in the time when pit ponies were used to pull the skips full of coal out of the mines.
It was hard work but Dick, who was never known to complain about conditions, endured the work to help make ends meet for his family.
He was around 14 years of age when he raced bikes at Gosford, around the era of Hubert Opperman.
Mr Young has a trophy from his bike racing days … a race from Lithgow to Bathurst.
He was also a keen tennis player and loved dancing.
After the war he went with a mate to pick peas around the Oberon district and cheekily told his mother he was "going to marry the world's champion pea picker", who was Thelma Batcheldor.
The couple were married in 1948 and he started rabbit trapping with Thelma's dad, Ernest Batcheldor.
Ern would carry 40 or 50 traps on his shoulders and walk for miles, always remembering where he left his traps. (Mr Young said he had to number his).
They had to use six horses pulling a four-furrowed plough and Mr Young would sit on the back, sowing peas and potatoes by hand.
They were hard times and rest days were few, but much satisfaction was to be gained from those days of toil.
Mr Young also went farming with Bill Hughes, from Ginkin, and both Bill and his wife, Sheila, became life-long friends to Dick and Thelma.
Many people will remember Dick and Thelma for their amazing success with their fat Iambs in many Oberon and Bathurst shows.
They were awarded the 2BS "Bathurst Farmer of the Year" on two separate occasions.
The couple were also successful in growing crops of peas, potatoes and turnips and grazing cattle.
As a team, Thelma and Dick worked many long hours through every season at Edith and forged a great partnership of over 54 years.
They enjoyed their farm work, tennis on a Sunday afternoon at Edith with many friends and Dick went to support Thelma and daughter, May, playing hockey on Saturdays.
The couple also loved watching son, Ernie, play rugby union for Bathurst and the Central West in his prime.
Mr and Mrs Young would often run charity "old time dances" in the Edith Hall which has left an indelible print on the minds of all those fortunate to have attended any of these occasions.
When friends think of Mr Young they will remember his good nature, his great spirit and his happy smile that made all of his family and mates feel glad to be around him.
Family and friends will all sadly miss such an honorable, loving man who enjoyed an admirable life.

1.1.1.3.4.1.11.3 Ida Pearl Batcheldor (1925…) m. Richard Simmons (…)

Ida Pearl Batcheldor, youngest of three children of ERNEST OSWALD BATCHELDOR and his wife VIOLET ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE CALLAGHAN, was born 14 April 1925; she married Richard Simmons ["Dick"; no middle name]. Richard was the son of GEORGE and MARY SIMMONS. they had five children:

1.1.1.3.4.2 Hannah Batchelder (1854…1855)

Hannah Batchelder, second of eleven children of JOHN BATCHELDOR and his wife JANE WORRALL, was born 15 February 1854 and baptised 26 March 1854, Cubbington. Hannah died aged 1 year on 2 July (?)1854 [perhaps this should be 1855] and was buried at Cubbington on 5 June.

1.1.1.3.4.3 Joseph Batchelor (1855…1931) m1. Catherine Hall née Hogan (…); m2. Ellen Jane [Nellie] Ro(a)dwell (c1880…)

Joseph Batchelor, third of eleven children of JOHN BATCHELDOR and JANE WORRALL, was born 1 July 1855 and baptised 29 July 1855 at Cubbington). [Joseph was incorrectly stated to be be aged 39 years on 1907 birth certificate of their son Herbert Thomas, but correctly stated as 76 years old on his 1931 death certificate]. Joseph emigrated to New South Wales with his parents and brothers William and John aboard the Abyssinia in 1859.

In 1881 Joseph married Catherine Hall [née Hogan] near Bathurst; the marriage of Catherine and Stephen James Hall had been registered at Bathurst in 1868, with possibly three children resulting (Catherine Hall, parents Stephen and Catherine, registered at Wellington in 1866; unnamed Hall, parents James Stephen and Catherine, registered at Hartley in 1872; and William Robert Hall, parents James Stephen and Catherine, registered at Hartley in 1877).

According to Joseph's death certificate, Joseph and Catherine had three children [order uncertain]:
What became Catherine is uncertain, but Joseph married Nellie [Ellen Jane] Rodwell on 15 February 1895 at Evan's Swamp NSW, according to the 1907 birth certificate of their son Herbert Thomas. The certificate also stated that Joseph Batcheleor [sic] was a 39 year old miner born at Macquarie in England and Nellie a 27 year old born at Wolgan NSW. It seems more likely to this author that Nellie was the daughter of WILLIAM RODWELL and ELIZABETH WOOD who married at Carcoar NSW in 1865, where they registered the births of Martha E Rodwell (1866), George W Rodwell (1867), Agnes Rodwell (1869), William Rodwell (1872), Catherine Jane Rodwell (1873), Sarah Jane Rodwell (1876), John Patrick Rodwell (1878) and Ellen Jane Rodwell (1880) [Nellie]. Evan's Swamp is near Tarana, between Lithgow and Bathurst; Wolgan Valley is northeast of Lithgow, the site of oil-shale mining with Shay locomotive haulage to the Newnes plateau, and some grazing.

Joseph and Nellie raised (at least) four [possibly five] children [not necessarily in the following order]:

1.1.1.3.4.3.1 Albert Leslie Batcheldor (1902…) and Christine Lottie Bonham

The birth of Albert Leslie Batcheldor was registered at Blayney NSW, he was born 5 September 1902, his mother noted as ELLEN J (remembered by Beatrice Cooke as Helen Joan Roadwell or Rodewell). He lived with Christine Lottie Bonham, and they raised (at least) three children [not necessarily in the following order]:

1.1.1.3.4.3.2 Herbert Thomas Batcheldor (c1907…1977) m. Irene Margaret Murray (…1892)

Herbert Thomas Batcheldor of Oberon (born c1907 near Wallerawang, parents noted as JOSEPH and NELLIE; died 1977 aged 69) married Irene Margaret Murray at Oberon in 1939; Irene died 27 September 1982 in Cobar. The only child from the marriage of Herbert and Irene, which ended in divorce, was:

According to Herbert's birth certificate Joseph Batcheleor and Nellie Rodwell had married in NSW on 15 February 1895 at Evans Swamp, and Joseph was a miner from Macquarie England aged 39 in 1907 and Nellie, born at Wolgan, was aged 27 in 1907.

1.1.1.3.4.3.3 Ethel J Batcheldor (c1910…) m. Walter Harold Ross (…1892)

The birth of Ethel J Batcheldor was registered at Carcoar NSW in 1910 [#13466], her parents noted as JOSEPH BATCHELDOR and ELLEN J. Ethel married Walter Harold Ross (Harry) at Parkes NSW in 1934; they had one son:

Diane de Guara (née Elsie May Batcheldor, Ethel's neice) thinks that Ellen J was Ethel's daughter (out of wedlock) and was taken in as Herbert's sister. Diane also mentioned (19 June 2002) that Ethel had a daughter, BELLE. Beatrice Cooke (pers comm August 2002) says this is Doreen Thomas, PO Box 27, Lutwyche QLD 4030.

In 1997 Ethel was living in Queensland.

1.1.1.3.4.11.3 Hylton Francis Melbourne Batcheldor (1916…) m. Marjory May Sutcliffe

Hylton Francis Melbourne Batcheldor (Hilton), born 1916, was the fourth of five children fathered by JOHN AMOS WRIGHT BATCHELDOR, the first child of his marriage to MABEL ALMA BOX (previously HEMBROW). Hilton married Marjory May Sutcliffe at Cowra in 1942; they had one child, a son:

1.1.1.3.4.11.4 Rex Alwyn Batcheldor (1919…1953) m. Marion Johnston (1926…1969)

Rex Alwyn Batcheldor, born in 1919 at Cowra, was the last of five children fathered by JOHN AMOS WRIGHT BATCHELDOR, the second child of his marriage to MABEL ALMA BOX (previously HEMBROW). Rex married Marion Johnston at Kurri Kurri NSW on 26 May 1945. Marion had been born at Kurri Kurri in 1926. Two children were born to Rex and Marion:

Rex Alwyn Batcheldor, a dry-cleaner resident at 188 Liverpool Street, Scone NSW, died at Cowra District Hospital on 2 January 1953. Marion Batcheldor née Johnston died in Sydney on 6 November 1969.

1.1.1.3.5    Sarah Batcheldor (1831…) m. Joseph Harwood (c1834…)

Sarah Batcheldor, Cubbington spinster aged 23 and daughter of labourer JOSEPH BATCHELDER, married Joseph Harwood at Cubbington on 8 May 1854. Joseph, aged 20, was a bachelor labourer of Cubbington and son of labourer GEORGE HARWOOD (born 1806 at Hampton Lucy WAR) and SARAH SUMMERS (born 1811 at Lillington WAR) who had married at Lillington WAR 18 August 1833. [The children of George and Sarah, each born at Cubbington, were Joseph Harwood (baptised 16 February 1834), Mary Ann Harwood (14 February 1836), Emma Harwood (3 June 1838, buried 28 June 1838), William Harwood (20 September 1840), Thomas Harwood (24 September 1843) and Eliza Harwood (born 1849)].

Bob Wallis (pers comm. 15jan2004) considers Sarah the single mother of bastards:

This may be so, or they may have been the children of contemporary Sarah Batcheldor born 1835, daughter of William and Ann (rf. Secton 9.1on page 66).
Children baptised to Joseph and Sarah were:

The 1881 census shews road labourer Joseph (47) and Sarah (50) living at Cubbington, next door to Ann and Henry Harris.

1.1.1.3.6    Elizabeth Batcheldor (1833…1842)

Elizabeth Batcheldor (born 1833) died aged 9 years, and was buried at Cubbington on 22 September 1842.

1.1.1.3.7 Harriet Batchelor (1835…) m. Worthy Sly (c1832…)

Harriet Batcheldor, daughter of labourer JOSEPH BATCHELDER and his wife ELIZABETH BOYES, was baptised at Cubbington 24 March 1835. Harriet married Worthy Sly at Leamington Priors on 29 November 1852. Worthy was described in the 1881 census as a bricklayer born circa 1832 Brinkworth in Wiltshire; the IGI indicates his father was DAVID SLY. Bob Wallis [pers comm. 15jan2004] notes that the Sly family seems to have first surfaced at Cubbington about 1852; they were traditionally sawyers and appear to have come from Lamerton, Devon.

Children of Worthy and Harriet were:

The 1881 census shews Worthey (49) and Harriet (480 at High Street, Wootton Wawen, Warwick, with Leis (14), William (9), Eliza (5) and John (1). Leis and William were notes as unmarried and with Eliza were listed as students.

1.1.1.3.8    Eliza Bacheldor (1836…) m. George Wright

Eliza Bacheldor, christened in 1836 at Cubbington war, was the youngest known daughter of sawyer JOSEPH BATCHELDOR and ELIZABETH BOYES. A spinster of full age from Cubbington, Eliza married George Wright at Cubbington on 17 July 1859. George was a widowed mat maker of full age resident in Cubbington, the son of carpenter JOHN WRIGHT.Eliza and George had at least four children: There were possibly other children born after 1860.

1.1.1.3.8.1 John Bacheldor Wright (1860…) m. Sarah Taylor

John Bacheldor Wright, christened 28 October 1860, was a son of mat maker GEORGE WRIGHT and ELIZA BACHELDOR. John married Sarah Taylor, and they had at least one son: John Albert Wright emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1890, it is thought with his father.

1.1.1.3.8.2 John Albert Wright (1881…) m. Josephine Young

John Albert Wright, born 28 March 1881 at Foleshill WAR, was a son of JOHN BACHELDOR WRIGHT and SARAH TAYLOR. John married Josephine Young in Boston MA, and they raised four children:

In 1997 Robert could boast more descendants than his siblings: six children, 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He considered that both his father and paternal grandfather, perhaps with another person, emigrated to Boston in 1890.

2. William and Ann Batchelor (c1815…1851)

Also resident in Cubbington during this period were labourer William Batchelor and his wife Ann, with children:

It is not clear whether there was any close relationship between this family and the previously described families. Ann apparently died aged 36 years at Cubbington on 5 July 1851 (pers comm. Bob Wallis, 15jan2004). Known details for the children of William and Ann follow.

Sarah was possibly the mother of bastard sons George Batcheldor and Henry Batcheldor (both baptised 29 April 1850; George died aged 1 week and was buried on 4 May, and Henry died aged 2 weeks and was buried on 14 May). Bob Wallis (pers comm. 15jan2004) notes that Banns were published on 2nd, 9th and 16th November 1853 for the marriage of Ephraim Standley and a Sarah Batcheldor. According to the IGI, Ephraim (baptised at Solihull WAR on 12 July 1835 to GEORGE and ANNE STANDLEY) married Sarah Batcheldor (baptised 5 July 1835 to WILLIAM BATCHELTOR] were married at Cubbington on 31 January 1853; Ephraim and Sarah were the parents of Ann Standley (baptised 24 April 1853), William Standley (baptised 26 November 1854) and George Standley (baptised 30 November 1856). [Note: some events may be confused with contemporary Sarah Batcheldor born 1831 and married in 1854, daughter of Joseph (rf. Secton 4.1.3.5 on page 61). Bob Wallis thinks George and Henry may have been sons of Sarah daughter of Joseph.]

William (born 1838) was possibly the father of William Batcheldor (baptised 21 September 1863) and Ann Batcheldor (baptised 28 July 1867), children of labourer William and Jane.

Emma, aged 23, was the mother of William Alfred Batcheldor (bastard son baptised 25 April 1869). Aged 24, Emma married William Alfred Smallwood (his mark) of Cubbington on 20 March 1871. At the time Emma, from Cubbington, was noted as the spinster daughter of labourer William Batcheldor; William Smallwood was a bachelor labourer aged 27 from Cubbington, and name-sake son of tailor William Alfred Smallwood. Their marriage, officiated by Francis Edge, was witnessed by John Smith (his mark) and Emma Smith (her mark).
