Dead Squirrels and Slipping Saints
Why is it you see so many dead squirrels on the road in the fall? Why are so many professing believers slipping out of church and falling into sin? Are these unanswerable mysteries? No.
The reason many squirrels become a road mortality is because they leave their normal summer habituation and safety of the trees to hunt for food on the ground for the coming winter. Since there are not many highways on the branches of trees (No federal money - yet), squirrels do not need to worry about dodging cars. They have little experience with today's drivers.
The other reason squirrels have head-on-collisions with autos is because of their small brains. Squirrels have no problem seeing cars. Nor, do they have problem hearing cars. Nor, are they mentally retarded even though they look totally crazy when they see a car coming right at them. (Thus comes the term "squirrel-ly") The problem is that the small brain of the squirrel cannot comprehend the speed at which an automobile travels. The squirrel's brain is unable to process the speeding car, which leads to indecision and often the death of Mr. Squirrel.
Is there a correlation between road-kill squirrels and the reason many believers are falling into sin? Perhaps!
Believers often fall into two classes. Those who spend all their time in the trees -- tight knit Christian circles -- and very little time in the real world. When they do advance out into the world, it is outright deadly. Facing temptation and learning to lean on God are things we need to know in order to grow. People who live in their own little glass "Christian Circles" are not effective witnesses and often fall hard and deep into sin when outside that circle. (Example: the nice young Christian girl that goes off to college and ends up deep in sin. Doesn't happen you say. Remember that I live in a large college town. It happens all too often.)
Of course there is the other class of Christian that lives his or her life playing in the road of world. Flirt with temptation and you'll lose every time! The word most often used for these believers is -- Stupid!
Another correlation between squirrels and believers is that many believers, like squirrels, have small brains! They have not stretched their biblical knowledge to deal with the ever-quickening pace of today's world. At one time in history information was scarce and slow coming. Today we have a flood of information, much of it false, bombing us hourly. Only a few years ago if you wanted to view smut you had to sneak around to find it. Today, you just buy a computer and get on the Internet. With high tech has came even higher temptation. And, while we need more devotional time, more prayer time and more church, we are seeking and getting less. Many believers have not stretched their biblical knowledge -- their brains are small and Satan is moving at lightening speed looking for his next road-kill in his Temptation-Mobile.
What can we do? For some, they just need to get real and get out into the world spreading the gospel of Jesus. Most alcoholics have no problem at the AA meetings, but the real test is when they are alone at home. Jesus is our example. He lived in the world but never partook of its sinful ways. For others, they need to get out of the street! Playing close to a bomb is stupid and deadly -- So is flirting with temptation and sin. And last, but perhaps most important, we all need to slow down and stretch our knowledge of God's word if we want to have victory over Satan's lightening fast temptations today.
Start by meditating on the following verses and refresh your zeal to know God's word. Then make it a point to find someone outside your Christian circle to befriend -- and tell him or her about your Jesus.
One last note. It could be possible that you don't know my Jesus. If that's the case, you're like the squirrel that is already in the sites of the hunter who is just waiting for the clear shot. Satan has you marked and sited and it is just a matter of time before you will be held accountable and found guilty of sin. Your only answer is Jesus Christ. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psa 46:10 KJV)
Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (1 Cor 15:33 KJV)
I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. (John 17:15-19 KJV)
