A Shepherd With an Attitude
He was so cute at 6 weeks, tail wagging, floppy ears and lovable. At 7 months he was a time bomb on 4 legs. He loved his family, all of us, and he was tolerant of women, but aggressive with men. He had to be walked on a tight leash and away from people. He was suspicious of strangers.
He came from what is called "back-yard breeding". No striving for conformation or temperament. Just the mating of two A.K.C. registered dogs of the same breed.Strangely enough he did extremely well in obedience classes amidst all the other shepherds and more than 30 people. However he would not let the examiner run his hand over his back when it came to testing. He did not growl or snap just kept stepping away.
Only a short time after we moved to Vermont Eiger developed a serious hernia problem and at 10 years of age he had to be put down. Our children grew up with him and still remember that very protective dog.
I later learned the best place to buy a dog was from a reputable breeder. He was my first German Shepherd and he taught me a lot.
Eiger at 4 months.
