The Gentle Giant

She was bought from a breeder in New York and rode home on my daughter's lap . At 6 weeks she weighed 13 lbs. and was destined to increase that weight ten fold. She claimed the family room and its sofa as her own and from there she could monitor the comings and goings of the family and all visitors. Her coloring was what is known to Great Dane people as a "Boston ". Which simply means that the black and white markings followed the pattern of a Boston Terrier. Although she could be bred she could not be shown, so we left her ears uncut in the English style.

Although she had the run of the house she seemed to know that she was too big to run inside and stayed in the family room except when it came time to be fed. Then she would go into the living room and sit by my mother's chair and wait to be called to the kitchen to eat. She was sweet tempered and at all times a lady. When she was 18 months old another dog came into her life.

Maggie in her favorite room.

A Waif by the Side of the Road

I saw him sitting on the side of the road one cold rainy day in October. He had no collar and was wet and shivering. I took him home and fed him and although I put an ad in the paper no one ever claimed him. He was a beagle-mix with German Shepherd markings and the body of a robust Dachshund with legs to match. We called him " Sam ". My son said he was a typical " little boys dog " happy, friendly and always ready to play. Our vet estimated his age to be about the same as Maggie's.

Maggie was happy for the companionship. Sam loved everybody. His tail was always wagging. Sammy was to outlast Maggie and 2 more dogs. He lived to the ripe old age of 17 years.

Sam and Melvin.
