A long time friend and companion.
Our daughter's friend set us on the track of our next cat. Her grandmother's siamese cat had two kittens and that was two too many for the elderly lady so she was looking for homes for them. I always wanted a siamese and so over we went to see them. There was a male and a female kitten. I took the male. What we didn't know at the time was one of them had fallen down the cellar stairs and had landed on it's head just a week before. You guessed it. It was the male. However he never showed any ill affects. I named him Melvin and he joined 2 yr. old Morris and our dog Eiger. A little more than a year later we all moved to Vermont.
Melvin got into a lot of trouble for a little kitten. He climbed the drapes, got stuck under the couch and had numerous other adventures. He grew from a dirty tan-gray kitten into a beautiful sealpoint siamese. A true tale of the ugly duckling. He was full of energy and kept us all busy trying to stay one step ahead of him.
He decided my husband had the perfect lap to lie in and made sure he was there as much as he could be. What he really loved was being able to roam the 4 acres.
He would stay out for hours roaming the area. A lot of birds, mice, moles and squirrels to investigate. However, he would always check back from time to time. Spring, Summer and Fall were his favorite seasons and he would be out most of the day.
He did have one accident. He was missing for two days and had us all pretty worried. Our dirt road was not traveled very much and we felt he would be safe around our place. We spotted him limping up the driveway. Apparently he had been hit by a car and had a dislocated shoulder. A quick trip to the vet and some rest and he was soon as good as ever.
Melvin was with us for a long time. He saw Eiger, Maggie, Morris, Max and Jake go. At 19yrs. and 3 mos. of age he was going blind and had already had two strokes. The quality of life was no longer good. He had ceased to be the cat we knew for so long. So, sadly we put him down. He was buried next to Morris by the barn.
