A furry soccer ball.

My younger daughter loved animals especially cats with extra toes. My husband did not share her enthusiasm for felines, extra toes or not. However after constant talk of a cat he finally gave in.

We knew of a litter not too far away that had kittens with extra toes. It didn't take us long to pick out one that resembled a furry soccer ball. We noticed that his black markings had longer hair than his white ones giving him a very odd appearance. This all evened out as he grew older. He got along with the dog we had by avoiding him. My daughter named the kitten " Morris ".

He was a lovely cat with thick almost silky fur. He seemed to know that although most of us thought him lovable my husband just tolerated his presence. Then one morning, after we had Morris a while, we caught the master of the house feeding him some scrambled eggs from his plate. Morris was here to stay!

Once, when he was about 2 years old, we almost lost him. Morris suffered from a urinary tract problem which took him to the Vet several times. One morning we found him curled up on the bathroom window sill barely able to move and we knew that the operation that had been discussed was due. After that Morris had no more problems of that nature. He moved with us and another cat and dog to Vermont. However, when he contracted feline leukemia, when he was 10 we couldn't save him. At the time there was no vaccine. He was buried near the barn by a large rock to mark his place.

And so to Melvin...............
