Halloween Safety Tips for You and Your Pet

EXTRA SPECIAL WARNING

Please be especially watchful of your pet(s) if they are BLACK, WHITE or BLACK and WHITE. There is a disturbingly high incidence of these colors of pets disappearing around Halloween Time. Please do not let your pets out (even in what may normally be a safe and fenced area) ALONE. Go out WITH them or at least watch them every second they are outside. Unfortunately there are some real sickos in our society who will torture and kill these pets especially at this time of year. It is also suggested that adoption groups refrain from placing animals during this time period (again, especially if someone is specifically requesting BLACK, WHITE or BLACK and WHITE pets).

Now back to our regular Safety Tips:

Dogs may not recognize their friends in costumes. If things are too stressful, give your dog a safe place to retreat to: A Crate or separate room.

If you take your dog trick or treating:

Put reflective tape on the costumes.

Be very careful of *what* kind of treats are given. Especially: NO CHOCOLATE.

If you are in costume too, be sure that you can manage to handle your dog easily (nothing to get the leashes tangled in).

Be sure your dog can walk safely in his/her costume. Can they see? Will they get their legs or leashes tangled? If over the face, is there enough room for them to pant comfortably?
